Urgent Tyre advice needed

I put urgent in the title because I have to go back into the tyre shop this afternoon to possibly kick off about some terrible tyres so I hope a few people wouldn't mind reading what happened and advise me what to do please...

Basically I have a mate who works in a tyre shop so I called him up end of last month and asked him for some tyre advice, basically I wanted something with good grip that wouldn't break the bank, he told me about some NEXEN tyres that were slightly more expensive than the proper budget tyres but comparable to the better known brands in terms of grip, so I popped in when I was passing and he showed me the tyres (they looked decent but I know Sweet FA about tyres) but didn't end up fitting there and then as it was right before pay day and I still had a couple of 100 miles in my old tyres.

Anyhow jump forward to this week and I went in for the rear tyres changing and basically they are CRAP I'm getting traction control lights flashing on my dash at 30 mph corners not even pushed them and TBH I wouldn't dare much much less grip than my old balding tyres.

So I checked them this morning and they aren't NEXEN they are Event that got put on, I called my mate, (on his mobile) and he said I needed to call his boss on the shop phone which I did. In fairness he told me to come in and he'd have a look but his first suggestion was to put the terrible event tyres on the front and some NEXENs on the rear, which I think he is wanting to charge me for... My fronts aren't new but they are well within legal limit and they are contisports so I don't want to swap them for these... I'm now worried if even the nexen will be any good as one of the things he said was that both NEXEN and Event were "good tyres" and I'm thinking even my mates nexen recommendation maybe just him being brainwashed into selling them by his boss

Help please I really don't know what to do.. I'm £120 down at the moment with a set of completely useless tyres to show for it and I'm off on a European road trip next weekend meaning a) I need some good tyres on my car but also b) I have naff all money left as the holiday is expensive.

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Well they've put the wrong tyres on, so they should correct that! Secondly ... Tyres have a releasing agent on them to help them out of the moulds. It can take 100 miles to scrub that clear, I had pilot super sports put on mine yesterday and until I've driven it for a few journeys I won't push them for this reason! Good luck with it though

If the deal was they were going to fit Nexens on the rear and they didn't, then you have every right to insist that they replace what they fitted with Nexens. The front tyres have got nothing to do with this. If you think they have life left in them, then leave them alone.

Bear in mind that some tyres take a while to "scrub in". Even with expensive tyres; e.g. Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics, this can be the case. Indeed, if your budget would stretch to Goodyears I would recommend them - they transformed my car when I got a pair fitted on the front.

Hope you get this sorted out and have a great road trip!

PS I must learn to type quicker because I have only really said what Tom said, but we can't both be wrong!

Also to add to the above, depending on your wheel setup you may have a staggered fitment so the front tyres will be a different size so can't be moved from back to front.

Cheers for the tips guys

I have these wheels on so not staggered:

It was nexen n6000s they showed me which I read good reviews of online so happy to swap to them, if you want a laugh though read some reviews of the tyres they actually put on.

So based on these I think even once scrubbed I'm not going to feel safe on these tyres

I actually just spoke to my mate and he said if when I pop in I point out to the boss that he had quoted me on the nexens then he should just swap them... so hears hoping he is fair with me

Just need to try and make sure I can get out of work this aft to pop into the tyre shop as I'm busy all weekend and don't need to be worrying about bloody tyres

Well a result, they going to swap the crap tyres for the nexen n6000s but gotta wait 'til Monday as they didn't have my size in

New tyres went on this morning, still not the ones I had agreed on initially, but that's actually a good thing got the N8000's fitted which are a more expensive option and didn't have to pay any more so I'm happy
