Hi Folks

I am in the midst of changing the failed roof motor on my 03 Z4.

I managed to take it out following Shipkiller great guide. However after instalation the hood only moved forward and was unable to move backward either manually or with the electric motor. I have had to take the whole thing out again to find the problem. Initially on the floor the same symtons persisted but then seem to free up. I am not sure if this was a problem with the Bowden cable sticking. It all seems to be working again on the floor using a 12v battery. Also using the bypass it works. Any ideas what may have caused the roof to move forward fine but unable to go backwards. Even using the Bowden cable didnt help? I suspect the Bowden was the problem - any ideas?

I intend mounting it back in the car in the morning

Any help much appeciated>

Although it sounds as if it may have been an airlock in the hydraulics, one thing to look out for is the following
have you put the hydraulic hoses on the wrong way around? (bear with me!!)
Check that the new pump is not stamped with numbers which are opposite way around to the old pump,
If it is, and you have put the hydraulic hoses to match the new numbering then that will be the problem.
The hoses have to be fitted to the same ports as the old pump, regardless of the new incorrect numbering.

I have put the cables on as per the the old pump ignoring the stamped numbering on the new one. Thanks for the suggestion though, appreciated.

I was told when i had my new notor fitted the hood needs to cycle 2 to 3 times off the car with seperate power to purge the hydralics and that the level then needs to be checked

Thanks for the info,

I think you are probably correct.

The roof is on again now and working fine using the pump and motor, so on that side a result

On the slightly downside using the bypass handle the roof closes fine however only opens about just over halfway. If you completely open the hood with the moter then use the bypass you can fully close the hood (hood up) Not sure about this and maybe only an issue if the motor fails again!

Time will tell

Hi marcusford,

I'm busy with my hood motor replacement and I have the same problem like you have..
Manual, I can't open the roof complete, the hood blocks half way .. I can close the roof manual complete without any problem!
I'm scared to use the motor.. I think sometingh blocked.. and if I use the hydro motor :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
I thought that the problem came from the cable but it isn't.. the cable works perfect, I don't see anything is wrong.
If you have a solution for your problem, than maybe you can help me with my problem..
Regards
Patrick

Hi Patrick
Sorry I missed your question which by now I am sure you have fixed. Out of interest did you resolve the problem. I never found what caused this same problem on my roof. I took the roof out of the car again and used a battery to test it work ok, which it! Refitted to the car and it worked properly...a mystery to me!

Regards
