urgent help won't start and I'm on holiday in ireland

Its not a bank holiday in ireland well I'm going to forget about it until Monday and get pissed in the hotel bar

Same happened to me years ago. Faulty starter motor. Just parked on a hill or slope for the remainder of the holiday (in France). Bump started each time. Amazing how a car in otherwise good condition will easily bump start is as little as 2m.

Enjoy the holiday and fix it at leisure.

Yep, that's a great plan

Bump starting a car with a catalytic converter ?

If I remember correctly, that chucks unburnt petrol into the cat resulting in destroying it ?

I can't see that, if the injectors are live and dispensing fuel into the engine the ignition system would also have power and the engine would start, exactly the same as if the engine was being turned over with the starter motor. If anything the engine should start easier with a bump because there is more power to the ignition system as when you engage the starter motor it virtually puts a full short on the battery :?

Also how to manufactures get cars to pop on overrun, it surely has to be unburnt fuel? We had a mini JCW and that popped and banged a treat and so does my zed but not as much.

Hey I could be wrong but it seems plausible

Could've saved you the time and told you it was the starter motor mate. Mine did exactly the same as yours.

I too changed the battery as it was still on the original one. Worth doing anyway, got a bosch s4. I then got a Lucas starter motor from eurocarparts and gave them my old BMW one back for a bit of cashback. Ended up costing about £60 total which isn't bad at all.

Been fine ever since. It isn't a difficult job to do, but obviously can't really be done whilst you're on holiday without tools.

Glad you got to the bottom of it. Hope you can source a replacement part or a posse of people each time you need a push start !

Thanks for all the help bump started no problem got to the destination my mum and dad and my dads mechanics soursed a starter and fitted it for 200 Euros so I'm back in business .

Love a happy ending; note to oneself to add starter motor to list of Z4 touring holiday essentials...
