Urgent Help Required

Ok, so I really could do with some help if anyone has had these symptoms before it'd be much appreciated if you could she some light please.

I have a rotational knock/squeak coming from my passenger rear wheel.

I cannot seem to find a cure. The knock goes away under acceleration, it also goes away when you take the load off of the wheel (like a wheel bearing would), or a wheel bearing.

But the knock is quite severe, and after removing the shaft, upon inspection the bearing is fine? No grinding, no movement, no spilt grease.

So, move two was to replace the shaft, could be the CV joints right? Well, fresh (albeit second hand) shaft gets fitted, all put back together, and it's STILL there. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

In conclusion, the bearing looks fine, the driveshaft has been replaced (for a second hand one) but what are the chanches of two being exactly the damn same?

So, has anyone had a similar problem? If so, what was it?

My final though, and one I didn't really want to accept, was that it's the rear diff? Has anyone experienced this?

So yeah, I'm sorry for so many questions, but I really need a hand on this one.

Hi,
no personnel experience, but it does sound like a wheel bearing.

How did you check the bearing ? because a bearing can feel fine when not under load !

Have a look on the drain plug on the diff ( they are magnetic on an mx5 ) they might be the same on BMW so if there is any where or break up in the diff you should see metal fragments on the magnet.

That's about all i could suggest. Like you i would have said it a wheel bearing drive shaft?????

Thing is, for how bad it is, it seems massively extreme for it to be the wheel bearing.. I've never known one to be this bad, ever.

I've tried the shaft, so it's not that, but getting the bearing out seems to require witchcraft, as removing the hub is rendered stupidly impossible by the handbrake cable being fixed on by a totally unknown means and there being no way to unclip it from anywhere.

I've bought a second hand diff as one came up, but it'd be nice if I didn't need it.

you will need a drif hammer to get the bearing out.. they do sound loud when they are on the way out the noise just gets louder

It's the squeak that throws me.

We have a press and all sorts, but I can't get the bloody hub out?

The TIS document for it is missing too?

I've disconnected the whole thing, everything, literally had the hub hanging of by 1 extremely tight handbrake cable? Any idea there.

A drift hammer eh? Interesting.

Thanks for the help so far all.

I can't believe a bearing would be shaking this bad and I have a bad feeling it's the diff.. but we'll see.

Ah, got one of those so we're all good.

Having looked, to disconnect the handbrake you must remove the prop shaft?

So you have to remove the prop shaft to change a wheel bearing? REALLY???????

Hang on a minute, do you change the bearing with the hub in situ?

Wasn't there a thread with workshop manuals availble for download once? That would be useful

Meaning at least an explosive view wold be good.

It's coming from only one side. Very definably the passenger, not the middle?

Which is why I didn't think it'd be the donut?
