Hi,

I got stopped at a Garda check point last week, and due to the back log of people waiting to get an NCT test, i am one of those who has been waiting nearly 4 months... and have a letter from the NCT to prove it... the Guard did not care and told me if i did not have a vaild NCT cert within 10 days (by this Saturday), i would be issued with 5 penalty points. Anyway to cut things short, i have just picked up a cancellation tonite at one of the NCT centres, however i still have one big problem... the horn on my car has stopped working (which will fail the NCT).

I have checked the fuse and everything seems fine on that end. I can hear the switch (relay) down in the passenger foot well when i press the horn. A couple of people have told me that it must be the horn itself and sometimes a small little knock on the horns with a screwdriver will fix them... has anyone ever done this

My main question is, is there a guide around that shows you how to get at the horns... thanks so much to anyone who can help

Does anyone know if you actually need to take the front wheels off the car on order to get it working, i have my test in 2 hours, so any help would be greatly appreciated

If you turn the wheel to full lock and open the access panels you should be able to reach inwards for the horn. I doubt you can do much other than tap it, which does sometimes work if they have been unused for some time. There's one in each wing void so you must have both failed or another circuit issue.

Frankly if the horns are dead and not a circuit issue you need the bumper cover off to accees them unbolt and replace new ones.

Good luck in such a short time.

CJ, many thanks for your help... your always give me some hope :D

I will let you know how i get on tonite... thanks again CJ

as CJ Says, it doesn't have to be operated by the button on the steering wheel...
rig up an airhorn from your local "halfords" equivilent, to the battery, and a switch.
Then just stick the switch to the dash with some 3m tape... bury the wires semi-nicely.. and you're away.

Failed... :o

1. Horn
2. Rear Springs | Coil Spring / Torsion Bar | Damaged / Broken

At least it wasn't only the horn... although now i am not sure if i need new springs or the whole arm also, as that they have only listed the above on my report and the guy who carried out the test didn't have the best of English... any ideas? ( :poke: CJ...)

do a search, the springs are a common issue

Obviously blowing the duck caller out the window didn't work

If it's the rear springs then they are a 15 minute per side straight swap out. Wheel off, bottom shock bolt off, press down the hub. Old spring out, clean top and botton pads, new spring in jack up hub, refit lower shock bolt, fit wheel, drink cup of tea. Repeat (on other side of car :) )

Would need to see what's up with the torsion bar and if it's bushes, damage. Not changed or fixed one so can't really comment, but I guess just a bolt and bushing each end??

Thanks for the info guys...

In order to get myself prepared (start counting the funds in my piggy bank) do you know of any sites that sell springs / shocks etc (so i can see the costs)

I was thinking of creating a post so that users can contribute any websites that they have bought parts / tyres / accessories from:

- tyres
site 1
site 2
site 3

- exterior
site 1
site 2
site 3

- interior
site 1
site 2
site 3

I always struggle to find good quality websites when buying parts for any car that i have had (maybe i am just crap at searching) but i also think that other users might avail of the post as some sites tend to be a lot cheaper than others.

Anyway, some one stop me if this has already been done... (as i said i am prob just crap at searching as i can't find one on the forum)

Thanks again guys

have you said where you live yet?

All these tests and guard points I'm guessing Beirut?

So back to my previous post, is there such a thread with a list of trusted websites

Nope.

I asked the same thing when I first joined, and got a few sites, but not a concrete list.
There is another thread on here asking about a "library" of information for the site - it might be worth combining your list (once built) with his list (also once built).

I don't go with this trusted site business for several reasons, having done it on a previous site:
1) they constantly change and new / better arise
2) One persons good site is anothers nightmare
3) It takes a lot of maintenance by someone to keep the list updated (and that usually means a mod)
4) its regional national and international

Best it to just search first and if nothing arises post and ask
