I heard my drivers door speaker making a funny noise without the key in the ignition, couldnt think why it was doing it or what could be causing it so i carried on washing my car. By the way i heard this noise 5 or 6 hours before i started to wash my car when i was in the garage messing about. I finished wahing my car i started to dry it off, this is when the trouble started, i opened the boot to wipe inside the boot jams looked down to see water in the boot, i lifted the carpet cover off the battery compartment to see the battery and the audio unit sitting in half an inch of water. I took the battery out and the audio unit and opened up the audio unit, water came out and the printed circuit board is in a bad way. The only thing i can think is that i put my car cover in th boot wet the other day and its seeped through what a prat i am. I have soaked the boot and hood with my hose pipe gun and no more water comes in so there isnt a drain blocked. The only thing now is the unit is going to cost £224 plus vat from bmw is there any where else i can try any help will be really appreciated as i have no stereo now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try to dissasemble its covers and use a hairdryer until its dry inside.
let it fully dry and there are a lot possibilities to work again, unless you have swiched it on when with water and there was sort circuit somewhere.

If not working you need a qualified electronics mechanic to fix it or buy new.

Another Canadian returns to the flock. Outstanding!

im pretty sure i aint got a leak ive just been a total prat putting the car cover in my boot when it was wet ive taken the amp to work today and sat it on a hot compressor for most of the day so its bone dry just plugged it back in and it still aint working so im defenatley looking at getting a new amp £££££££££££££££££££

I have had the same problem, I am sure it was caused by the cover where the rear elastic gets caught on the rear seal, the water then runs into the isude and under the warning triangle cover then straight into the amp.....

It took me ages to work this out.

tedster - I can't believe you could get that much water into the boot on a wet cover. I've thrown whole wet tents into my Jeep many times and you'd struggle to carry a cup of water in on it, but you talk about half an inch of water in te battery compartment

I'd continue to look for the leak, boot not closed properly, ian's suggestion, etc.

Trust me it's happened twice to me

I also just throw the cover in the boot, ( on the cover ) all you get is a small puddle, not enough to get it wet.

very good thought about the elastic on the cover this sounds very plausable indeed the water has only being there since i used the cover. All the inner carpeted boot panels are removed now and ive soaked the car for the last two nights on the trot and no water is in the boot ive sprayed all over the boot down the roof under the rear arches and there is nothing in the boot it was starting to eat away at me but the cover idea sounds like it could be it. Still it aint solved my problem of the amp £224 plus vat from BMW is really expensive but having no radio is really bad.

Ian did your amp get soaked and fry then like mine?

Yes and Yes(ish)

My Amp 'thumps' when you swith on the ignition and at the moment it clicks when your driving.

I am awaiting my bonus at work which should just about cover it. :x

I have taken the amp apart with no luck, it has no condensation or water marks.

ive just found out my girlfriend has a friend who works at bmw she can get me the amp with 10% off not a great deal but i suppose its not to bad. my amp was sending the clicking noise through the speakers most promenent in the drivers door and it thuded when i switched the radio on with a total loss of bass until it gave up totally!
