URGENT - DISA Valve?

Hi guys,

Wondering if you can help diagnose my idle noise. I've always thought it was a little on the loud side but it's only now that I've gotten over the new car unfamiliarity that I've started paying more attention to it.

Is this the DISA valve?

It's also worth noting that when you turn the engine off, there's a very slight rattle - followed by a faint whooshing noise 5-10 seconds later. I've noticed this the last few times I've been driving.

I'm supposed to be off on an 800 mile round trip across Wales next week so I need to get this resolved ASAP!

Following the advice of a friend, I tried some carb cleaner around the DISA valve - the revs didn't go up as expected.

Keeping the clutch pressed in on shutdown seemed to reduce / get rid of the rattle although the whoosh was still there - as seen on this video.

It's hard to say what it's going to be just looking at the video. It is possible the Disa is at fault, they are known to get rather noisy when they start to fail. The good thing is the Disa is an easy thing to remove and check and there have been recent posts covering this topic.

I'm gonna give it a go this afternoon. It's the whooshing noise on shutdown that baffles me, I've not seen that mentioned in any of the other DISA threads.

It seems as if the rattle on shutdown (which goes away with the clutch pressed in), is the DMF and not necessarily something to worry about.

it's 10min job to remove and inspect Disa valve. Maybe do that instead of posting videos of random sounds :lol: And wile you there clean the engine bay as it looks horrible.
 
I did spot a tear in the lower intake boot so I've ordered a replacement which should be delivered and fitted on Tuesday. Not convinced this is the cause of the noisy idle but it should sort the air release sound out.

Is this too much play? It springs back fine and there's no rattle when shook.

That looks fine to me mate, though did you check to see how secure the pin was at the top? It's still worth getting the overhaul kit from eBay though to eliminate the risk of the top pin dropping into the intake manifold and causing havoc... The peace of mind is worth the £50 and 45 minutes it takes to install.

While this doesn't help you diagnose your noise issue, it appears you've at least eliminated one component!
 
Thanks for the feedback mate, pin seemed OK. I'll be ordering one of the upgrade kits as like you said, £50 is better than forking out for an engine rebuild!

this is the MAF and nothing to worry about, they all do it as part of a cleaning process

yep the MAF sensor sends a current through itself after shut off to burn off any dirt that might have got into the sensor! my Vauxhall Corsa used to do it! glad i read this thread though as i now know my DISA Valve is also fooked! does anyone have a link to which one i should buy?

It's clutch wobble, it's the run down of the clutch as you stop the engine, nothing to worry about and as you say with the clutch dipped it doesn't do it.

well ive just ordered the Kit £52! also got in booked into the garage to have this sorted along with a big list of other things!
 
Piece of piss to fit mate I visited them an got it for £40 only problem I had was the lock thread they supplied had dried up so I had to gets another tube the next day. Seems to resend much better now and when I put the sport mode it's a bit mental so well worth the money just for that 'upgrade' :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

im honestly useless with things like this! do you have to remove all the intake from the airbox to get the DISA out? or can you get it out without removing other pipes? ive got some instructions on how to do it but i dont really have any of the tools needed!
