Upto £600 camera advice

Yes, another thread on recommending a camera!

I own a Fuji X100 which provides me with hours of fun, however it's not the speediest or most reliable of items to work with, so I'm looking to provide myself with another option. Preferably fairly compact but something big and capable enough to handle most things.

Don't really want a traditional DSLR by the way; just something I can be creative with, with a decent sensor that I can get some great pictures out of.

Seen this new Sony Alpha 6000, which I must say looks fantastic. £650 with lens.

Good optical zoom/wide angle options would be preferable too by the way!

All recommendations gratefully received.

Why not upgrade to the x-pro1 if you're happy with Fuji?
Nice camera but don't want to spend more than about £600 all in.

Carol - think I would like something a bit bigger with a larger sensor. Maybe changeable lenses.

I've been using a Sony NEX 5N with one of their Zeiss lenses for the past couple of years and have been really pleased with the image quality from the 16mp APS-C sensor. If the sensor in the A6000 improves upon the earlier sensors, I'd seriously consider it as a replacement for the 5N, but I'd like to red a few in-depth reviews to be sure before I splash out. I just hope the extra megapixels on the A6000's sensor doesn't mean a noticeable reduction in low-light image quality compared to the 5N.

The biggest criticism of the NEX range has been the extent to which users had to delve into the menu to change even the most fundamental settings (e.g. the 5N doesn't even have a mode dial). I think the A6000 addresses this by having more buttons and dials and a better laid out menu.

I've been pretty happy with the 5N's menu dependent operation and like its compact size. But the A6000 seems to take several steps in the right direction, is still quite compact and has the added bonus of a viewfinder.

Although I'd love to be able to justify splurging around £2,400 on a Sony A7r full-frame camera with a compatible Zeiss lens, I simply can't. So I'll be looking very closely at the A6000 when it comes out.

Cheers. New Sony does look pretty specced. Replacement for the NEX, although there are of course some good NEX with lens kits available at bargain basement prices because of it.

Panasonic GX7 with 14-42 zoom £749 kit and Panasonic are doing a £100 cashback up to 31/3/14 purchase date and also afree 3 year warranty after purchase ,gets rave reviews ,just bought one pic quality astounding and that is from an Olympus DSLR

makes price £649 for an £900+ camera at list

I'll check it out wegras.

RJS - Had a few and its too much of a faff carting around. Want compact but not too compact!

I've been searching and seen the slightly older Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 with14-42mm lens kit can be had new for £290.

certainly is,
GX7 is quite a step up from GX1( which it replaced) as claimed by the Photography press however price looks attractive

check if UK stock or grey import may influence warranty in UK ,a lot of the Panasonic lenses on Amazon for instance in their market place are grey even where they are the fulfillment agent

Debating whether to try it or spend on the GX7 (bonus of viewfinder too). Decision before 31st for £100 cash back deal.

Good price for that Inks.
I wished I hadn't looked on that site now, I've just seen a lens for my 7D.
Before you buy from SLRHut, check places like AVForuns and the DPReview forums - they seem to be advertising grey imports from the US which, at the very least, causes issues with warranty claims in the EU.

Their London address of Unit 17, 336 Kennington Lane, SE11 5HY is just a branch of Mailboxes etc. http://www.mbe.co.uk/londonvauxhall

NB In addition, grey imports don't normally qualify for any cashback deals

Digitalrev are cheaper than SLR hut.

Yes they're grey imports too however they also have a warranty service in place too.

I know what I would do and you get a genuine 3 year warranty ,If you decide on GX7 ,I can let you know the Local camera shop that is matching Amazon prices ie £749 before cashback
Way of checking whether UK stock is offer of UK cashback availability .

I gave up lugging DSLR around ,this GX7 is a revelation weight wise and quality of pics
