Upgrading the Profesional Navigation mapping + software?

Hi guys (& girls) 8)

One thing I would like to do is upgrade my navigation mapping, at present it has a CD in the drive (not DVD?) covering UK and most of europe however it is not the most detailled and somewhat out of date with my local roads - let alone the depths of swizerland!

Does anyone have an experience of updating the navigation software or how much BMW would charge? I don't particularly want to mess it up but hear that the later versions add new features and making the routing smarter.

I assume to upgrade the maps its just a case of buying the latest DVD from BMW and plopping it into the drive? (I hope that the DVD's contain more detail?)

Any advice and discussion is much appreciated  :driving:

Adam,

From the signature I see a 2003 model and professional system and therefore likley a MkIV DVD based system.

Firstly you can update the os software yourself to V29.1 That is widely available and free. Try X5world.com for download and details of exactly how to do it. That will give you the capability to view in 3d perspective and is way better. It really is a 5 minute job. Indeed I have now reached the point where I enjoy hacking the OS about and making my own splash screens, changing sky colour, icons, etc.

The maps themseves can be obtained from BMW and are very expensive, but are worth it if the local roads are out of date. An alterantive is ebay but you need to be sure of what you are buying. PM me if you want more details.

Not a great picture as it's washed out by the sun, but by chance I retrofitted a widescreen into my X5 this morning, so see attached picture for what a zoom in map, 3d would look like (except for the cameras, which is another story)

Hi,

Sorry for hijacking the thread. I picked up my Z4 last week (will post pictures when/if the sun comes out to play again). I've upgraded the satnav firmware to v30 and will soon be getting the latest Europe DVD. I would like to add the UK 'safety' camera database - is there an idiots guide anywhere you could point me towards? I've done this to a hand-held TomTom using Pocketgpsworld.com - I guess it will be a similar process but which software package do I need?

All help gratefully received

BMW charges 90 gbp for the upgrade dvd, which is a lot better then they ever did before.

2008/001 is available now

Yeah, I'll definitely be going for the upgrade option...just want a new set of wheels first!

I was not aware that V30 firmware was available. I thought v29.1 was the latest? If you have it a pointer to where would be interesting.

In terms of the disks. OEM looks a good deal. If you want to take them apart you need a couple of different programmes to edit the iso file and some iso burning software. I suggest go to X5world.com. Those guys have got the whole subject sorted, links to the software edit tools and so on.

I'm comfortable with changing splash screens, icons, etc. but left the speed cam POI setting to someone else.

I've just found this web page that answers my own question if anyone is interested:

http://www.bmwnavaddpoi.co.uk/imageway.htm

...a bit more complicated than adding cameras to a TomTom :dizzy: ...but I enjoy a challenge!

Remember the dealer offer - if you take in your existing DVD, they will give you the new one for 90 gbp

im sorry.. like many of us in here i have a few geek tendancies... so was looking for it in different places.

plus, then you also get the speed cameras merged in =)

I've looked at V30 software and it contains no new features when compared to V29.1

No point in upgrading if you have the MkIV DVD unit
