Upgrading Speakers (base spec)

So my car has the base spec audio of 6 speakers. It has iDrive incase that makes a difference.

I was thinking of upgrading the door and rear speakers and adding tweeters to the doors.

I want to keep the parts OEM.....so my question is, should I just replace with the exact same ones (65139133409 here although I don't see much point in that) or replace with the ones from the hifi speaker spec (65139240641 here) or the top hifi pro spec (65139141501, here?)

I don't want to add an amp or anything, so would I see (hear) much difference between them?
 
I certainly wouldn't bother with a like-for-like replacement of the base versions, and I was under the impression that the HiFi ones were no longer available.
I upgraded to the Aliexpress B&O copies a while ago now and can safely say they have been brilliant.

I watched your video earlier and am comfortable with the installation process.

The links I put to Sytner Stevenage imply they are available (although I can't see anything that says in stock).

Want to stick with OEM as opposed to aftermarket. Do they do B&O originals for these cars?

BMW did at least 2 if not 3 versions of the 100mm door / shoulder drivers..all imho were not great..but the 677 was a bit better than 676..not sure what was in the base..hard to imagine it was even shittier than the 676..

There was never any B and Q or B and O versions afaik..

Folks seem to approve of the Chinese copies ..some suggest the Mini version of the 100mm works well too.

If a tight budget / a lack of pedantic audiophile attention are the factors then for the cost try it and see if you’re happy..

The after market high spec products are not as efficient (you trade efficiency for quality) so the head unit will struggle to drive them..especially roof down with any speed..
 
Swapped mine out for the match up ones. Big difference in sound quality.

Same here,had the basic 6 speaker setup and it was atrocious-my l200 pickup puts it to shame! Replaced with the match speakers with tweeters but have to say still not impressed so considering the plug and play vibe amp

You need to recode the headunit to ‘hi fi’ as the audio response has been heavily tweeked for the crap speakers..🧐

Also it doesn’t have enough power to drive the inefficient speakers as previously mentioned..🤔

The Aliexpress copies are based on real BMW speakers from the X5, X6, 6 & 7 Series, the part number is 65139224869, and retail for around £160 each. In the likes of the X5 then they'd be hooked up to the top end amplifier, which is the same one we have in the E89, the Top Hi-Fi 677 but with a minor tweek (a factory B&O tweek, which is what I'm running). All I can say is from my own experience, and that is that I've had no problems.

As for the one i said was no longer available, i was partially correct as I was looking at the old number, the one you quoted is indeed still available

Do you have the basic 6 speaker set-up or have you upgraded to an amp as well?

I don't want to add an amp, so would like to know if the Ali express ones are ok without the amp, quality and volume?

Originally, when that video was made, and until last year I had the standard 6 (8) speaker set-up, and it was all fine :thumbsup: Mine is now a little more powerful, as I up'd to the full 677 option, but with 16 speakers :cool:

The link only lets me order 1 pair of the midrange speakers, but found these from the same seller as the tweeters, and they come as a set of 4 speakers.

Just checking they are the same? They look like it, and the part number is the same, but I'm a pleb so want to double check :)

Yeah I've just checked that, that's a bit odd :oops:
Anyway, yes the link to the 4, a much better price, and yes they are the same (probably all made in the same factory anyway!) :thumbsup:

Just placed the order. Says they are due on the 18th November, which will give me time to get some plastic pry tools.

My speakers arrived today, all look ok.

I aren't going to have time to install them all today, so thought I would remove the two rear speakers and leave them disconnected to see if the error messages disappear. They didn't. Ironically I received an error saying a fault with the rear right speaker....presumably as I'd unplugged it, but not the rear left.

So, regarding the speakers....I think I will need to use the flylead that came with the tweeters as the connection on the end of the tweeter won't fit into the main speaker.

Also, does it matter which side I connect the wire to on the speaker. On the two rear speakers, they were connected to different connections, see pics:

I installed Match and Hertz speakers as per my thread of August. Quite expensive at £400 all in but the sound quality achieved by the 10 speakers (four coaxial) using the existing head unit and amp was transformational.
 
Looks like it’s going to be dry all day tomorrow, so going to attempt to fit the speakers and while the door cards are off, see if I can do the puddle lights at the same time.

It’s interesting that although I also had the base speaker setup, I found replacing the speakers as Dave showed in his videos, made an enormous improvement. I haven’t upgraded the amp as yet - or should I supplemented it with another amp - but I’ve noticed before on two E90s that I had, that the Idrive ProNav amp does seem better than those without idrive. Not sure if that is in the published spec or not, but there seems a bit more volume and less distortion than the base non idrive version.

Anyway, I was wondering if there are recommended woofers for the footwells that retain the necessary sensitivity (to maintain balanced volume) ? I’m still on the originals, but having seen the original base speakers, I can imagine how relatively poor they are as well… and I’m thinking it would be good to complete my upgrade by replacing them as well…. Any recommendations welcome or experience from your upgrade welcome….
 
I installed the new speakers the other day and all went relatively well. Did the puddle lights at the same time.

Passenger door went well, pretty straight forward, but the drivers door was a bit of a pain....

There is a wiring loom near the actual speaker, and on the drivers door it was kinked and sitting on the edge of the speaker....the original speaker had indents on the edge where these wires had been pressing against it.

No matter how much I tried to bend the wires out of the way, they kept moving back so in the end I managed to push them out of the way and hold until the door card was almost fitted and I think it stayed.

Haven't really turned the volume up yet, going to keep it low to let them break-in (if that's still needed) but they do sound much better already.

Regarding the foot well speakers...I don't know, Dave ( @AnubisZed ) might know.

incidentally, I have these up for sale that I removed from my footwells. They were an improvement to the oem ones, I just wanted more grunt so changed them out.

FOR SALE Thread 'E89 hertz footwell speakers'

Hertz Cento 165 that i removed from the footwells of my e89. I fitted these earlier on in the year, but have now replaced them for different speakers. No issue with them, they work as they're supposed to. These are 105w rms each. Looking for £60 posted.
