upgrading from 6 speakers to 10 speakers?

ok so basically ive got the 6 speaker system, but the 2 speakers behind the head rest have stopped working so im only running on footwell speakers and tweeters ATM. i got some replacement speakers off a forum member but when i asked for the speakers behind the seats, i got the big subs that go in the storage compartment. (my mistake)

so my question is, can i just get some replacement speakers for behind head rests, replacement speakers for door cards(currently has nothing) and then wire in the subs behind seat in storage hole? (and retro fit the amp??)

its either retro fit as much standard BMW stuff thats possible or upgrade the existing speakers which is a mission from what ive read on other threads?

thanks

oh and can anybody confirm the speaker sizes for when/if i do buy some replacements:

Footwell: 6"
Tweeters: 1"
Doors: 4"
Headrest: 4"
Subs:

I looked into ripping out the rears but getting at them is a huge strip the rear end out of the car job,so this is what I did- leave the weedy 4" rears alone, fit speakers of my choice in cubby holes, buy bmw speker grills to cover them, connect new speakers instead of originals.

trouble is, the 2 rear speakers behind head rests have stopped working all together so i cant just leave them. im up for a challenge of dismantling the Cabin/back to get to them on a weekend sometime as i can have a good look at everything else while its apart and possibly combine it with wrapping the interior parts if that has to come apart too (don't fancy doing it all twice lol) just wondered if it was worth upgrading to a certain type/brand while i was in there or just source an OEM BMW replacement and hope it doesn't blow up again...

also as u mention about the speakers behind the seat.... i already have the bmw speakers in the fitting plates so would only have to screw them in (and possibly order the protection grills if it bothered me as there not seen anyway) but would they just wire in or would i have to amp them etc?

Hertz do a really good 3 way system
Disconnect the rears at the head unit
Install new kick well speakers trying to seal the area around them as best as possible in a effort to try an seal like you would a sub one of the herzt kits plays down to 30hz
Install new door speakers
Replace the tweeters
You'd want to use the Hertz crossover so will have to utilise some spare pins in the door connector
I'm also looking to do this very mod

I will look into the Hertz stuff

there seems to be a fair bit of people attempting this change, but a lot just do 1 part (like just add the door speakers) but i want a whole refresh of the whole lot so will try and do all the research and stupid questions on here and then hopefully do a tutorial and collate all the info on a fresh thread once ive got it all sorted.

i dont want to go crazy and spend loads but if i can make the current system much better from just adding, say, the OEM door speakers by buying some off ebay for <£20 then its worth while. if going a little further and upgrading the door/rear(there same size) speakers to an aftermarket set for say £50 thats worth doing also. if i can go all out and replace footwell, doors/rear and tweeters for say <£100 then also not bad. or i could be completely wrong and its gonna cost doube/triple that in which case not worth it.... but thats what this thread is for :D

Hertz are expensive
Buy a 3way component set at the most your happy to pay.
If no sound deadening material in doors add some, pre face lift didn't have any makes such a difference in general

Lose the rear speakers, if you went to see some live music you don't stand with your back to them,
In a saloon car some rear fill is worth it if you carry passengers
And still try an seal the kick well speakers regardless of which you buy

hhmmm ok,

will defo check sound deadening on doors (mines a 2008 so assume it already has some??)
and will try seal footwell speakers, whats best for doing this?

point taken about the rears so will have a think about if there needed

I disagree about losing the rear speakers. Yes you don't stand with your back to speakers but in most setups you have speakers in front and behind.

Music from behind is good and it's where I hear a lot of the output from in the car as it's nice and close to your ears.

Looking at doing something similar, going to replace all standard speakers and add a sub in the cubby holes. Do you happen to know if they do a speaker fitting kit for the cubby holes or do I need to make something?

when BMW put them in cubby holes they came like this.....

so i assume you can either make something yourself or get the original plates/brackets and just install a better speaker?

ive got 2 of these speakers in the brackets and want to install them but not sure what wiring etc is there?

Does anybody know if the wiring is in the doors where the speaker blanks are.

as far as im aware, no. but apparently the tweeter cable can be tapped into as its a full frequency signal

Search for PerryGun's thread in the how-to section - full guide to tapping into the tweeter wiring (which is actually full range signal) and putting a 4" speaker in the door car.

Jingle, what I have done is use a 4-Channel amp to power some footwell components and the same size components (6.5") behind the seats. I removed the storage bins and mounted the speakers in the same way the 10-speaker system has its subs.
(I'm in Ely if you wanted to have a listen).

Ely isnt that far from me really so might have to have a drive some time :)

i already have the speakers behind the seat in the mounting plates (currently cubby holes) so wouldnt be too hard for me to just swap the speakers over for better 1`s, im just not that clued up on amps etc so need to do a bit of research.

would it be possible to upgrade the footwell, cubby holes, door and behind head speakers and then amping all 4 pairs, or is that over kill?

Mine has the BMW Professional 10 speaker system and I'm very pleased with it - shame you are so far away or you could have had a listen.

If you are up for the dismantling the rear, would it be possible to source the bits you need for the factory 10 speaker system?
