The standard head rests have been doing my head in for a while now. I like my head rests to work. IE be able to rest my head on them. The ones on my Z dont tilt forward. My friend fits tv's to head rests and gave me a set of black leather ones from a 2009 merc. These ones pull forward and up and down. What a differance. Does anone else feel the same about the standard z head restraints?

personally ive never rested my head on one whilst driving, but as im tall and have an upright driving position and i also have a tendency to lean forward that would explain it. my thoughts were that head rests are there for when you have an accident, they have to be at the right hight so they catch your head in a shunt, not to actually lean your head against. rests at the wrong height actually cause neck damage in a crash, or so my driving instructor told me years ago. cant see how you would add merc ones without butchering your existing seats.
They just slipped right in. Perfect fit and colour. I know what you mean regarding the saftey aspect but i will worry about that if the time comes. I had a 530d sport b 4 the z4 and the head restraints in that were perfect. When i am driving long distance i like to be comfortable.
I always thought they were head restraints, i.e. there to prevent your head being snapped back should you be involved in a a rear end shunt. Of course, for the Z4M drivers they also prevent whiplash when accelerating hard!
M seats don't have a separate head restraint. I never rest my head on the seat-it's there to catch my noggin' if I need it too.
Guess different strokes, but I've never seen someone who's had instruction in performance driving resting their heads on the seat.

I agree with the above they are head restraints to prevent neck injury in the event of a rear end or whiplash inducing accident, not headrests and the head should never be rested on them.
I drive end to end of the UK and sometimes Europe and have never once thought about leaning on the head restraint other than in the services for a rest.
Stil I don't read maps on the steering wheel, make non handsfree mobile calls, watch TV while driving either, but as Smokin says each to their own.

Wow they look like they would do some serious damage to your head in an accident, or do something unexpected to your neck.
Hideous looking and IMHO rather stupid. Seats are constructed in a very specific way for safety and tested endlessly for accident safety. :thumbsdown: Still each to their own.
SR - I read somewhere that when setting up a seat it should actually be reclined somewhat (within the realms of correctly reaching pedals and steering wheel) as this transfers vertical shocks into the seat back and not directly down the spine, but that's another thing altogether.
