upgraded factory sound system

What does it consist of, and is it considered to be good, like a bose system for example?

I think I have more than 6 speakers...perhaps around 10 or so...so I was thinking it must be the upgraded one from what I've read...is it a particular branded one?

There are 3 systems

Base 6 speakers no external amp

Hi-Fi 11 speakers 8 channel amp

Top fi 14 speakers more power external amp

Speaker quality varies by spec

They are all bmw specific and common to almost all other BMW’s except the speaker configs vary as does the DSP processing to suit the type of cabin and type / quality speakers..

Yours has an ASD active sound design that generates fake engine sounds into the speakers..

If you want to upgrade you’d be better off adding better quality speakers and an external amp if you want to keep the head unit..after that it gets more complicated

1 big rear centre
2, each behind headrests
2, each behind seatbelt tensioners
2, each mid door
2, each door tweeters
2, each foot well
1 big centre dash....

Where would the others be?

The 14 speaker system has a seperate tweeter in the front central area in addition to the mid range unit in the 11 speaker system and a mid range and tweeter in the centre rear bulkhear near your in board lughole, those two are unique to the 14 speaker system..

I therefore must have the pro package with 12,13, and 14.

So I guess there's no need for me to touch it as it seems fairly loud, and I'm not the most demanding audiophile.

I appear to have 8 speakers, 1-6 + 9 & 10.

Yes there will be two big round covers behind each seat. 8 speakers was not an option on the E89, It’s either 6, 11 or 14.

A previous owner has added tweeters in the door pillars I guess, I'd have preferred the rear subs...

You’re counting blank covers I’d assume.
