Upgrade to an "M" roady

Hi Guys

Although I've only had my old dolly for 6 months I'm seriously hooked on the Zed. So much so that I'm already contemplating an upgrade to an "M" model.

I've come across this one on pistonheads which looks a real cracker with the black & red combo.

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/bmw/z4m-roadster/bmw-z4m/5435441?v=b

This one has 32K on the clock and I realise its top money, but hey you only live once! :D There is even one on there with only 16K on the clock for the same money but don't fancy the black on black combo.

Any thoughts on prices now and of course in the future would be helpful although its not my main concern. However I don't want to drop £10K in a year :(

Also how they drive / ride in comparison to the older models like mine which have a different type of steering I believe. Mine has 18" alloys with non run flats with M Sport suspension.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the other option would be an E89 35I or IS which I could get for the same money but I feel the depreciation fall off would be much steeper and I personally prefer a manual..

Cheers.

That looks a nice example but at the higher price end for an MR as you say.
If you're not planning to put more than a couple of thousand miles on it per year then it shouldn't loose too much value but if you're planning to do more average miles then you might loose around £5k? Nobody knows what the market will do though.

I've never driven a non M so can't compare the two for you but I assume it would be very different.

If you have deep pockets I'd say go for it. If you have any concerns about money stick with what you got.

Steering, brakes and ride are different but you get used to them in no time. If your buying an M your really buying acceleration.

Looks like a beauty. If you have the funds go for it. Only thing Looking at the Service History the Next Service could be the Ins 2. Ask and if it is use it as a bargaining chip to ease that price down a bit. Good Look.

Car linked does look nice but if you cant prep a black car to look well for a sale then they should give it up  even by Parkway standards £20k is a cheeky ask for early ///Mroady heading towards 40k & possibly needing ins2 :? i wouldnt go over £18k for it & even then its high end
Head towards 50k & thats a £15k car if you need to shift it privately
Work out what you want from the ///M experience & study the market before fixing your budget
As for comparisons ? Just do it , the ownership experience is worth the extra £ , the noise  & the extra punch are both big plus points before you get onto the subtle style mods & of course the steering, supsension & geometry all flatter the average driver into thinking they have suddenly become gifted drivers in the bends :driving:

There's no doubt that's a beautiful looking car - Black / red combo wow  As for buying advice Mr Wilks has pretty much said it all

RE the combo its not that hard to find in the ///M roady , ,i think member "bigpow" has similar motor available for sale with full spec/nice shoes & no service requirements for around £14k ? Miles up around 70k i think :?

If you have lots of patience and time there are always one or two forum ///M roadies popping up - take DPG's recently sold beaut, but that assumes you have cash and aren't having to sell your motor first.

I went from a 2005 2.5SE Z4 to a 2006 Z4MR. They are chalk and cheese.

My 2.5 was a lovely car with a lovely balanced feel (cornering / acceleration and braking being somewhat equal).

The Z4M feels like a more grown up car at slower speeds with the different suspension kinematics and the interior upgrades (seats, steering wheel) and at higher speed very direct.

The gearshift is quite mechanical (more so than the 2.5) and the throttle and engine response is hair trigger compared. The steering weight and feel is at another level from the 2.5 and the brakes too are a league better with much better bite and pedal feel.

Then there is the engine... From 1000 rpm to 4500 rpm it feels like a normal big hearted straight six - smooth and turbine like, but when you press on and let it rev past 5000 to 8000 it takes on a completely different animalistic character. It turns searing with a real motorsport edge.

Let's not forget about the software controlled M differential and the agility and 'pointyness' that it gives the front end.

Sorry... It's not just a faster Z4. It has a completely different character and to be honest it's probably not for everyone. I love mine though. It's totally bonkers.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I will for sure do my research and not buy the first one I see.

It always concerns me on a low mileage car if servicing has only been done to the schedule rather than by time.

I'm not in a great hurry so can afford to find the "right" car.

As far as mileage this is purely my second / weekend toy so max 3k per annum although she won't be a garage queen as I don't have a garage LOL but a large driveway, incidentally do these models suffer with the same drain hole/ roof motor problem as the older models?

Cash won't be an issue if the right one appears.

I notice nobody commented on the E89 35is?

Cheers

That does look a nice car and is local to he, I know the detailer there well I can ask him how it was when it arrived if you want me to? They often have ///M's in so know the brand well, top end money wise as Mr Wilks says though :driving:

Thanks Darren that is very kind of you, When you buy from a dealer you never know what you are buying or where it came from. However, at this stage I've just started looking so don't want to take the full plunge just yet. If I can I'd like to pick up a known car through the forum.

Regards.

It's a mechanical diff.!!

Should probably look on the for sale section on the forum to get an indication of what usually well looked after M's go for.

That and you should maybe have posted this in the M section for an M point of view.

And yes it is probably over priced.

For that sort of money I think I would want to buy AUC and get a years warranty (try and blag two years though!)

You are of course correct it's a limited slip diff, but tuned to work harmoniously with an M tuned DSC set-up was what I was meaning.
