Upgrade from E85 to E89?

Ok so I've had the old girl for just over a year now and it's been a lot of fun. I'm now getting slightly itchy feet and seeing as the early E89's are now coming into a decent price range, I'm thinking that I quite fancy getting an upgrade.
However, coming from Elise-land where the S2 introduced a new look, but got flabby is the E89 that major an upgrade or is it mostly cosmetic?
I'd hate to jump ship as it were only to find I preferred my old Zed.
So my question is, does anyone who upgraded from an E85 to E89 regret the move, or was it the best thing you did?

I had a 3.0 e85 roadster, liked the car, hated the ride. The e89 isn't as hard core, which is why I have it ;) Do I regret it.. only from the spending money point of view as the car is fab.

Agree with Maniac, had a 3.0si before, the E89 is 90-95% the sports car the E85 is, but in my veiw does everything else 95% better. i wouldnt go back for all the tea in china.

I would say that if you come from a lower engine model, the E89 is a nice upgrade.

For us 'M' boys and girls, there is no equivalent so it would be a step down.

I moved from a 3.0 e85 to a 2.3isdrive e89 definitely miss the power of the 3.0 but in every other respect the e89 is a better all rounder
more of a cruiser compared to the e85

Not having a rag top has to be worth it in it's own right. Although I have the Z3, after the E89 would never have a fabric topped car again. Tin tops make it 2 cars into 1 :)

Tim.

I tried just about every E89 and E86 version going when I got my zed.

I'd recommend trying one, the E89 is certainly more of a comfortable cruiser. Not saying that's a bad thing though, I expect to trade my 3.0si coupe in for a smaller engine E89 eventually

I came from an e86 (z4mc) and they are very differant things , both fast , e86 sharper , e89 more rounded , do I regret it 99% of time no

100% agree with you here Tim. Thats why some lucky buggers have ordinary cars with roofs, for the mundane stuff and have a sports car for the fun stuff. :P

Completely agree - who needs a boot and the less weight ;)

i do miss the power of the coupe but the e89 is definitely a more useable, comfortable, everyday car and better looking too. if i do upgrade, it will be for either a 30i or 35i

I dont have a bad word against either of them. But the 89 is more refined.

You do need to compare like for like engines though, 3.0 v 3.0 and there is nothin in it both tied on 5.7

Unsure on your 2.0 v say a 09 2.3 but would say its a major step up, your 0-60 is currently 8.2 Verses 6.4 for a 2.3 what are you waiting for. NO BRAINER. Even the current 1.8 will be faster at 7.4. My dads bilingo would seem faster, hes chipped it lol.

I would never go back to the rag top, only positive is that you can get more in the boot with top down, the 89 is larger with it up, and so many other plus points to count.

I had a hard top, I had one which went on in Oct to April so lost the odd sunny days in winter, now its down more often, and mess with waterproofing and hovering the top. Nothing worse than scuff marks on a black rag top.

I did err on side of caution and jumped from a 2.5 si sports to 3.0i sdrive, just in case it was a bit bloated.

My 2.8 does feel more resposive than the 3.0 pulls differently too guess that may be the difference in auto I had before, seems to just pull but I need to work it a bit different,

Oh yes 3.5i is 0.5 seconds faster than my 2.8 but thats not a lot compared to 6.4 V 8.2 seconds.

I also came from an E85 Maldives Blue 2004 2.2i and now have an E89 Deep Sea Blue sDrive 23i. Loved the E85 when I had it, but that's only because the E89 wasn't around at that time! 8)

I had my E85 for 8 years or so. I thought that i would never change......... Tried the E89 35i with DTC and was hooked. Much better ride comfort and much, much , much better steering feel. E85 steering feel is not what it should be.

I came from a 3.0 E85 to a 3.0 E89 and like most have said here, I wouldn't go back. I loved the E85 but the E89 is just a bit more grown up and has more toys!

Don't let the M boys muddy the waters for you and in my opinion stick with a six pot motor - That is the motor the car was built around.

Best advice is to go and try one - I did that and was hooked!

Thanks for the positive replies guys, I think booking a test drive might be in order, trouble is I just know that's going to spell big trouble for the bank balance.
I can't think of a car before where everyone agrees as one that the later model is a genuine improvement to it's predecessor; invariably there are always the die-hards who think that any change is for the worse.
