Upgrade brakes

I remember reading that you can swap the front brakes for the slightly larger 330 components. Can you swap for e46 M3 brakes?

I'm not sure about the swap. I'm curious have you used your current brakes under road course conditions and if so with what pads?

Is it possible to put Brembos on a Z4? I have a Range Rover Sport with Brembos and braking can be done with just one toe !!!

I have to admit, I expected much better brake performance from a sports car.......

I think that Brembos can be put on a bicycle.

Better brake performance as compared to which vehicle?

you can put M3 breaks if u get the entire setup...carrier, caliper, rotors and pads but they will be significantly more expensive than a 330i setup. 3.0 Brakes are smaller than 330i

so

M3 > 330i > Z4 3.0 > Z4 2.5/325i

20 ducks, I see what you are trying to say, and I agree with you, but I don't think that most people care. Pretty brake setups are often like gold on rappers.

BMW factory brakes (not the pads, but the overall setup) work fine for the street. I don't care for the dusting, but on the street, they don't fade and they stop quite well compared to most cars. If you feel they aren't good enough, try a race pad... just be sure to heat them up. As soon as I get back into DE's I'll be getting some racepads for the track.

If you are looking for a good setup, I'd recommend this guy: http://www.zeckhausen.com/BMW/Z4.htm

He's tooting his own horn on the products trying to sell you more like a good salesman, but he has a nice selection of brake components. Seriously though, if you aren't on the track (and you didn't say that in your initial post) you might try upgrading just the pads to the Axxis or Hawks. Much better feel, better stopping power, and little to no dust.

Just my .02.

I wasn't recommending pretty brakes, Brembos are nice but might be a sledgehammer to crack a walnut was were I was going. I also believe that half the brembo rotors sold are fakes. What I wanted to know was what he was going to use them for. If street the EBC or Axxis pads upgraded pads are fine. The regular pads only reduce dust. But if you gotta stop in 10 feet every time that is a different story. btw, I have rarely heard anyone complain about BMW brakes and, quite frankly, was surprised at his comment about them not as good as he expected.

FYI, I use Hawk HP Plus for my DE and AutoX events.

The smell of burning brakes smells like...like victory! :)

Well I recognize it about the brakes. My previous car was a BMW (E46) 330i and those brakes are better, although the Z is almost 140kg lighter.

Well just to explain. I don't think the brakes are bad at all as standard. Im more than happy with them and don't plan to turn the car into a permanent track toy.

The thinking was that i want the brakes to look nice, and so was looking to take the existing calipers of and have them sprayed dark grey with BMW logos on them.
Then I had a thought, a set of M3 calipers is dirt cheap to pick up second hand and i will need new pads/rotors some time next year, why don't i just upgrade at the same time so my current calipers aren't of and on, which is difficult as its my only car and i'm very dependant on it.

Therefore i could buy all the bits have them painted all lovely like, and do a whole fitting some time next year.
Just depends how much the carriers would be, is that what we call them here in the UK?

Be careful when comparing a Range Rover and a Z4.

I remember a friend changing to a larger servo on a car and he said it made the brakes better. I explained that all he did was make the peddle better. The brakes (the bits that rap a spinning disc) were the same.

You need feel and control. A better biting setup is not always ideal. I system that fades is terrible if you are on a track but may never notice the fade on road use.

Remember the 911 customers who recently opted for the ceramic disc on their GT3's. they needed changing at 9,000 miles at a cost above £6,000 !!! These guys would have specc'd carbon fibre if they could as 'that's what they use at LeMans'. Great for LeMans but gob awful on the road as they never get to working temperature.

I shall need to change my discs front and rear soon so will look at aftermarket rotors. Have to say that the BMW parts are quality discs but I migt get a better deal elsewhere.

Happy driving
