Quick Qs, I had a coil pack go earlier today and replaced. The car felt instantly responsive and no stuttering at all; This could just be chance as ive only driven the car 2 miles home, and as mine normally stutters when cold - would a failing coil pack cause this at all?
I had the same thing - I didn't notice the insidious loss of performance whilst it was failing (no hesitation to speak of), but I did notice the marked improvement once I'd change it.

 I'm half tempted to replace the rest now

I did mine end of last year, £126 for the set, easy 30 min diy.
Made no difference to the running of mine but nice to have piece of mind because when one fails you will know about it and it will generally stop your journey. I carry one spare on long trips.

Well, after a month of heavy spending, and expecting the car to be perfect for a while, I've now started getting the low-rev stumble (revs drop to 500rpm, almost stalls then comes back to 850rpm) when I come to junctions/lights/etc.

Driving around it at the moment, but suppose I'll have to budget for a couple of TP sensors and ICV clean?

I'm still not 100% happy with mine, Darren Wood's put a new battery on but with no luck. Its currently at local specialist seeing if they can find anything wrong with it.

How much is a TPS?

It was fine before the new battery & alternator, and for about a week (1000 miles) afterwards.

£60-£70.

Hi all,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from reading the thread, it seems that replacing the TPS and cleaning the ICV doesn't cure the issue. Also, cleaning the MAF connectors and VANOS refurbishment doesn't either. Resetting DME adaptations helps for some, but is a temporary fix (didn't help for me). It seems that the only person to have cured his is PASZ4Mc. He said that BMW traced it to an earth fault causing a voltage drop, but didn't ever post the report from BMW advising where the fault is. I notice that my headlights and fan blower are significantly brighter/faster on reving than on idle, so perhaps there could be some truth in this?

Mine was cured also but only after having the engine rebuilt with new cams, followers, gaskets and rod bearings. Nothing outside of the main block was changed or altered (sensors, intake side, icv etc) with as far as I know, but the engine was out so the earthing would have been reconnected afterwards I would have thought? This was ~10k miles ago.

Earthing was checked on mine when it was getting the alternator & battery done - and my voltage is really steady (compared to the 11.5-15.2v it was giving).

I've got about 2 weeks left on my BMW Comprehensive Warranty. I'm tempted to take it in and see what they come up with, but given it drives perfectly otherwise I'm a bit reluctant to be without it while they play (if they even agree to take it on).

Well mine is f**ked. I can't add much more than that. It's sat in a BMW workshop with a new DME module and still refuses to even start since they coded it.

Two weeks and counting and I'm about at the end of my tether with it. I'll stop posting on this thread until I get it back and know whether they fixed the fault it went in with.

FYI, the stutter on blipping the throttle is not the same as the Rev drop on pulling to a halt. The BMW tech agreed with me (and others on the forum) that this is likely to be a vacuum pipe leaking.

Sorry to hear of your woes, most annoying I bet. Not sure I would agree with the BMW 'tech' (in the loosest possible use of the term!), certainly my revdrop and stutter/hesitation were cured as one and always seemed to me very much related.

Tend to agree with this to an extent, the rev blip splutter disappeared mostly when I changed my ICV so was deffo connected, the rev drop didn't although saying that - at the time it would still seem spluttery occasionally when blipping, just not as bad and not as often. So yes I would agree they probably are connected, but just to throw a spanner in the works when mine was doing it I had a smoke test done on the intake with no leaks at all so no joy there, unless they messed up the smoke test somehow.... :tumbleweed: That doesn't however rule out a vaccum problem which I think it still is, just that it's not a leak....

Occasionally it can be a weak hose collapsing under vacuum so that wouldn't show in a leak test. Either way, getting that fixed seems a distant hope at the moment. They car isn't running at all.

Indeed, something vacuum related seems the most obvious answer, would be interesting to see what BMW come up with if they get round the bizzare DME fail!

Well, mine has just cut out twice when I started the car after a pee break on the way to Glasgow.

Started with tiny amount of throttle, but was showing an EML but my iPhone app only gives a non-specific error message.

I've obviously opened the wallet floodgates :headbang:

mmm-five, sorry for your woes. Check everything is connected properly on the intake side of the engine. I had a similar problem after routine work on my engine and it transpired a hose had worked its way free.

m5.... we have all been through this with a car we love!! I'm sure you have with the 5... GL, on another note, hows the oil temps?
