Updated BMW sat nav discs - www.satnavi.com?

I'm disinclined to buy anything like this on ebay - too much dodgyness I'd imagine - but came across this link: http://www.satnavi.com/beemer.php - seem legit and claim to have endorsement from HonestJohn and also the Telegraph paper.

Anyone heard of them or used a disc from them?

What's the worst that could happen?

Car concerned is an E90 3-series with sat nav, not a Z4.

Mmm, not enough info on there really but I did wonder if it would be possible to shoe-horn a 3rd party navigation application onto BMW hardware by effectively "jailbreaking" the nav hardware. That would be ideal and perfectly legal. Not sure of any other way of providing a (legal) mapping solution cheaper than BMW.

I hate to ask as I know the answer won't be cheap: roughly how much for a BMW disc?

Depends what you consider 'legal'.

Their T&C's that are really extensive spell it out very clearly that they sell software purely for backup purposes, IF you own the original version of the software. I'd suggest 99.99% of their customers do not own the original software and thus are using it illegaly.

IMHO it's just pirate manufacturer software with a few extra files of POI's added.

Worst that could happen is that you brick your DVD reader. In reality that's seems unlikley from a large vendor like this.

Not really an item for forums to promote.

Maybe...

Thanks for the replies. I'll have a think - Peddy's PM'd me details of a vendor he's used before successfully so I'll have a think.

You'll only brick your nav computer if you put in a f/w load that's non standard (and duff) or have a fail mid load. The worst that will happen if you put in a map disc from Cap'n Jack Sparrow Software is that it just won't work and you've lost your money. Really surprised that Teleatlas etc haven't shut sites like this down. They're not a backup copy of personally owned software, they are distributing copies of software or data made outside the T&Cs of the original license.

Either way, the car manufacturers are ripping us off. I get lifetime map updates on my little Garmin unit for the grand total of a one off payment of £60. TomTom aren't as generous but it's still a damn site cheaper than a map DVD for an in car system.

Ho Hum.
