Update: Front Knocking

I have knocking from the front I can't identify. I've changed out a lot of the front suspension parts but nothing seems loose. Knocking comes when going over bumps slowly and sometimes at a bit more speed. It can sometimes happen when moving but without the suspension feeling like it's moving.

I am thinking it could be engine/transmission mounts - any ways I can test these?

Yes, drop links, ARB bushes, shocks, top mounts, wishbones. All replaced and nice and tight after they had been done. Nothing seems loose suspension wise that I can see.

Strut braces are tight. Though I may remove them and see what happens!

As for the engine mounts - yes, I suspect them but how can I check? What would be tolerable play and how?

Subbed. I have a similar issue, but have always relegated it to the 'too hard to diagnose' basket. This thread could give me some ideas on where to look. First thing for me will be to get a torque wrench and make sure the strut bars/braces are correctly torqued. They seem a common cause of mysterious noises.

I too have a weird sort of creak/knock on mine, that appear to be emanating from behind the radio, wonder if my braces need a tighten?? Something to check at the weekend...

Mike

Turned out it was the front subframe a little loose. Tightened up and all good.

Have a feeling I only torqued these up originally and they also need angle tightening.

Strut braces are also torque+angle. Need to be done up surprisingly tight.

I had a similar problem. I took it to BMW and they said there was play in the strut brace. They tightened it up and it's as good as new :D

I guess the best way to check the enginemounts is to take them off and inspect on cracks (but that's a lot of work).
Try to rev the engine a bit with foot on the brakes and letting the clutch grab on and off.
And then see if the engine has a lot of movement. (obviously you cant do both at the same time so someone must help you).

I think you can see the inlet side engine mount when you peek down from the left side. the exhaust mount is more difficult to seen.
Maybe you can place a little camera down in the engine bay. (and if it shows a worn mount, obviously place that video here ;) )

The transmission mounts you can only see from underneath. Maybe you can see them with a mirror.

Hi Steve do you have a reference for the torque settings? thanks

Yes, TIS - I've not got them to hand but can post tonight when I get home.

It's something like 40 odd Nm + 105 degrees +/- 15!

Cheers would appreciate if you could post them. Is TIS one of the programs that normally on a cd with INPA etc?

Yes, TIS usually comes with INPA. It was a right pain to install but works for me well now. There are copies online but they're not as easy to navigate.

Thanks. Have a copy of INPA installed on my old laptop so will check to see if I have TIS
