Upcoming Service Advice

Hi Guys,

My inspection I service is coming up and I intend to do it myself. I have an official list of all the checks and potential changes that are checked on inspections but I plan on doing a bit more of an indepth check.

The history of the bmw from previous ownership is a bit dicey (hit or miss) so that's the reason for a deeper check. I'm hoping for some advice on if there's anything extra you'd add, anything you'd change, or even if there's anything you think might be unnecessary. Here is a list of planned changes:

  • air filter - Bosch
  • brake fluid (unsure what brand but i believe i need around a litre)
  • cabin filter - Bosch
  • Spark plugs - Bosch platinum
  • brake pads -Brembo
  • Engine oil (unsure of brand and amount currently)
  • oil filter - Bosch

For reference I have a BMW Z4 E85 3.0se (auto)

Engine oil 6.5 litres
5W-30. Fully synthetic. Pick a good make.
My personal filters preference would be Mann, but Bosch is good.
Plugs, if you have no history then yes, change them.
Brake pads? Check the condition of the current ones. No point changing if plenty of wear left.

If your car has high mileage many of us use 5W40 Fully Synthetic as this is recommended for higher mileage cars.
The rest of your list looks spot on, but I would also change the Diff oil to know exactly what you have in this going forward.
As long as your auto box changes gear ok I would leave the Auto Box Fluid alone. Engine wise I think you have got it covered with your list and if doing it all yourself you will know its done correctly.

you should at least have a look at the auxillary belt, that might need doing.

and agree with enuff_zed, i'd check the brake pads, but wouldn't replace them unless they were worn. same for brake discs.

Good call on the belts. Both so easy to change too.

Thank you so much! yes I'd say it's higher mileage (sitting around 120k) so thank you :)

As far as breaks go the pads do have quite a bit on them and I'm sure they'd have a year or so left in them but they've started squeaking recently when I'm breaking and I was hoping some new pads would get rid of that... Either that or grease them 😂

have you tried another brake bedding in procedure? 10 or so hard stops in a row from about 60mph to 10mph, then 10 minutes driving round with no brakes to let them cool off. might fix the squeak, and will ensure your brakes are working optimally.

No harm in having the wheels off and pads out, piston retracted and a good spray of brake cleaner, red brake grease the pin sliders wire brush caliper pad sliding areas and put some copper grease on the slide surfaces and rear of the pads. Just use brake cleaner if you have painted calipers. Do check condition of the rubber piston seal and slider pin boots, replace if they have holes or splits
Annual brake clean is a good idea. If the squeak is from the rears then taking the Disc/Drum off to clean the dust out probably best. Bit more involved with rear shoes you can be to release the handbrake cable tension from inside the car, lift the gaiter I and find the spring latch to do this then you have to back the shoe adjusters off through a wheel bolt hole so the drum can be taken off. Good clean with brake cleaner and put it all back together. Unlikely the shoes would need replacement but check their condition.
