unique smg problem (i think)

First off, I have searched and read through all of the SMG posts to the best of my knowledge and can not find anyone reporting something similar here or on google.

I have a 2003 Z4 3.0 with SMG and all of a sudden I am experiencing something I can best describe as double shifting. It doesn't happen in any specific gear or at any specific RPM's nor can I seem to reproduce the problem at will.

For example: I am driving along (not in sport) and this morning it happened when I was shifting from 5th to 6th, I pulled back on the gear lever and I felt it shift but there was a fraction of a second pause and then the feeling of it going into gear (again)..... it almost felt like it was lurching forward but I'm having trouble explaining it.

I know this is kind of vague, but if anyone has had a similar issue and can point me in some direction I would really appreciate it. I moved from a larger city to where I am now and there is no BMW dealership for 70 miles and I haven't found an independent shop I trust yet (at least not with SMG).

:headbang:

update:

I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery and took it out for a spin. It seems like it might be fully engaging whatever gear I switch to, but after the gear change is made the car lunges forward a bit?

All these self diagnostics and nothing... :(

Does the SMG have a dipstick for transmission fluid? You might check that. Sorry I can't really help-have a proper manual transmission. :poke:

You know what you can do with your proper transmission.....

It takes a while, but I learned to love SMG... although the muscles in my left leg have atrophied I still prefer it for laziness sake. I'm checking all the fluids today, so hopefully that's all it is. I appreciate the replies, and I'll post the solution for the other 5 people with SMG for future reference. :)

With BMW the general cure for SMG faults is - replace the pump & relay.

Certainly what I had when mine was a bit jerky on pull away (new clutch under warranty) and wouldn't change out of D when I went to turn it on (new pump and relay).

Sorry - can't be much help.

Well, I took it to the shop yesterday had them check all fluids and do an oil change.... hasn't screwed up since... weird.

I'm not going to get excited for at least a week of no problems, so anyone is still welcome to post similar issues here if you have had them.

Was your car jerking in higher gears? Seems like I get off the line just fine. My pump 'sounds' normal, and I never get stuck in any gears.

Wasn't jerky at all, just pull away sometimes and then just before starting (as if the system wasn't priming).

Pump & relay replaced fixed it though, been fine ever since - and I got a new clutch too - bonus!!

How many miles did you have when that was done? I guess it was low if you were still in warranty. I'm at 81k miles so I get to freak out when things go wrong now. :)

Sounds just like the problem I have with mine, just very hesitant in the lower gears. Its coming up for the first major service soon so I guess I'll see til then
