Here's how it went for me in the USA. Was laid off from managing the parts dept. at a motorcycle shop in Washington state. Went to job services to see the veteran rep. as I'm retired military. All the veteran rep could find was a custodial (janitor) position. (No disrespect intended) The hiring firm required three professional letters of recommendation from prior employers. Trouble was I was in the military for 20 years. Self employed for the next ten years. And 2 wage paying jobs. So I've only had 2 employers that I could get letters from. So I asked the vet rep to try and go to bat for me. He said no. He explained that even though he is paid by the tax payers. He is technically hired by the employer to be their HR department. And so is there just to make sure I have all the proper boxes ticked and has no obligation to actually assist me in getting a job. I then told him he was a very dishonest person for calling himself a veterans representative while actually representing a hiring company while pocketing the tax payers money.

Luckily, My wife and I are one of those rare American couples that is not up to our eyeballs in debt. So we can live without me working. So we said now is our chance to do something completely different. And that is how we found ourselves moving to Germany.

I am one of those people that are unemployed but not counted by the government as being unemployed due to not collecting benefits.

So sorry for being a windbag.

I can't claim either. So after paying 40% tax for years I am deemed less worthy of help than some workshy layabout who has never got off the sofa in his 'working' life :evil:
