Ultimate 108's? - Update

In another post I mentioned I was doing another set of 108’s so a bit of an update as I was asked for more shots.

Started with a set of scrap 108’s that had never been refurbed, but had original diamond cut rims and perfect condition stars.

First step was to get them stripped and inners mirror polished by the local wheel specialist (mate and an enthusiast too - so it really helps)

Came up like this:

This weekend it’s been a case of cleaning the polish residue off, then applying 4 coats of 2 pack clear lacquer.

The recent compressor purchase came in handy and a mis spent youth of spraying my own cars soon came back :)

Next I needed to get my ‘stars’ off the Zed, so a quick wheel change and swapped the spare stars in for now. Made me realise how much I like the flash chrome stars. Power tools allow a rim to be broken down in less than 3 minutes and rebuilt and torqued in <5 so no big ask.

Took the chance to apply a quick freshner coat to the calipers which were really just a bit dusty. Silver now looks so flat

Quick test build of gthe new look as I'm impatient...

I’ve polished the lacquer this morning, filled the mating faces with clear rust inhibitor and have just to put a silicone bead on the rears as a partial seal.

So here’s the result so far (photos are difficult as it's so reflective and makes the stars look black although they are between sterling grey and reflective in reality):

Early this week I need to swap the tyres over, then job done and will get some decent shots.

Real enjoyable project so far and may just be the ultimate set of 108's, but that's for time and others to judge.....

Good job. 8)

Looking forward to the finished article and cant wait to see what you decide to do with the "flat silver" rims you've got left over!

This is a little easier to see, but really need to do some good photography once on the car:

Dannyboy - I'll refurb the rims keep the stars 'as is' and sell them on to anyone on the board who wants them

Nice work.

However, the mirror finish inside the drum of the wheel outer appears to be more diffuse after the lacquering?! Does it need rubbing back to remove the orange peel and bring back the mirror finish?

I think the idea is to not have the mirror effect? So more like the polished metal, but without the corrosion... At least thats what I like about them!

Exactly - I have toned down the mirror to get a 'warmer' but obviously polished metal effect on the inners. The outer lips are highly polished and mirror like.

They will come up a little shinier when I final polish the lacquer now it's hardened and apply a few coats of Poorboys wheel protector and then maybe wax.

Corrosion protection over bling is the key

CJ - a bit of quality work here. Get them fitted and phots on the Zed please. But why did you have to do this - I've got 2 weeks leave in the UK shortly and now I've just got to do this.....

Top work as usuall CJ and looking good the inner rim finish now looks nice the mirror finish was to much in my book

You guys want to see them on - then you'd better believe I do...lol

Just gave them an brush around of lacquer on the inside edge of the rim. Worries me as out of sight so vulnerable.

Going to try to get them on tomorrow, but subject to work

Sorry Nosa - took the new rims up to the refurber today and he made an offer and bought the 'old' set on the spot. Since you or someone will ask I accepted £300 for them 'as is' and he'll be swapping over tyres onto my refurbed ones on Thursday. That just about confirms a near ready to use set, without kerbing woudl sell on the open market at around £400.

Way too simple to just drop by new on, old gone, no shipping or refurb to do. :)

Now a 2 day wait to get the new on as he's real busy.

Ahh well, would have done the same.

Worked out well for you all round,

I Keep looking at the pics, they do look superb, as everyone else is saying Cant wait to see them on. 8)

OK - So sorry about the wait but I got a bit busy on Friday to take pictures.

They have worked out really well. Photos don't do credit to the inside of the rim that can only really be seen by eye.

One before clean up after the first run spun out some of the corrosion inhibitor:
(only had rubber valves with chrome ends and caps - not sure about them so will change back to countersunk srtandard when next yres go on in a few K.)

Look great, CJ. Great result full stop, but somehow even more so considering this was a DIY job

Like that lacquered finish, softens it nicely. Oddly, I think the match the clear lights and reflector well.

Never tire of looking at that diffuser
