What about us wrinkly old pensioners!

Yes, I don't know how we will manage, Look's like I'll have to stop going to my 2nd home in the Lakes so much  :)

Dr Nick, have you calculated your hourly salary when you are on call? Personally, after 14 years of hard work, and paying thousands of pounds from my salary to further my training, I find myself being paid £7.54 per hour when I'm on call.

Fair enough but what's your annual take home salary? That's private, of course, I'm just saying that some might argue being on standby in case you are needed is the 'downside' to a highly regarded, professional career? I know private sector workers who do extra hours, 80 hours a week or are on call for no extra money at all, simply because the role demands it.

Just playing devils advocate here before all the doctors try to lynch me :D

My salary is reasonable, but nothing like what I would get with the equivalent qualifications in the private sector :fuelfire: However, I have enormous job satisfaction which is worth at least as much again...or so I tell myself when I'm operating late on a Saturday night (unfortunately, it's rarely just a matter of being on standby when on call).

Sadly, much of the once held respect for doctors has been lost, not least thanks to Labour's endeavours to undermine our profession...and those damned GP salaries!

I don't doubt that determined, ambitious people will work hard in any area, and that a great many people work long hours for little financial reward, and often little thanks, so let's hope that they get to drive home in an ///M :D

DrNick and the other medical guys, one of the things about your job is that you're doing a good thing, helping people, saving lives, not sure what you specialise in?

I work in construction which is an aggressive, dog-eat-dog slog :headbang:

I work in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, which is pretty similar really...it's all about the power tools and big hammer :headbang:

Cheers for the responses Doc/s :) Interesting discussion.

However, I think that it is somewhat misleading to assume that public sector workers form a single generic cohort, and that this is directly comparable with private sector workers.

TOTALLY agree. Public vs Private is often painted like a Coupe vs Roadster debate ;)

There are grossly overpaid, unnecessary roles for massively underworked people in both sides of the economy just as there are hard working, underpaid and under appreciated individuals in both sides. The difference though is that when it's in the public sector, its not profit but tax payers money being wasted, and thus something should be done.

When people talk about cutting spending and 'waste' in the NHS, I think of that useless administrator on £80k who seems to spend most of her time forming a committee to design the flyer for the Christmas party, not firing doctors and nurses or reducing funding for facilities. I like to think that's where the axe will fall, but maybe I'm being a bit idealistic.

:o

You mean you'd get rid of her because she's not firing Drs and nurses, and reducing funding!!!

one more, then I'll stop..promise..

Where can you hide a £20 note from an orthopaedic surgeon...... put it in the notes

Ah - not a bad budget for me :)

As a self employed company director and owner who took al the pain into recession, no company pension, no job security, no payrises and decrease in turnover, it's good to see it go somewhere else this time.

Might even award myself a and fellow director Mrs CJ a pay rise from our £6k per annum to celebrate.

......and what the flying f**k is item 7 - Video Games tax relief?

It's something that is much needed but is being dropped by a short sighted government :fuelfire: :headbang:

The games industry is larger than the films industry in the UK, yet we don't get the same tax reliefs. It's harder and harder to justify development studios in the UK, despite some of the best talent in the world being here. Instead companys are going to France and Canada that do have tax relief schemes. Not to mention growth in the far east.... lots of people but the talent is still usualy from the west

Just to tweak a few t*tties here.......this is where my copper bottomed public service pension AND my public service salary is going. Having served in the armed forces, and 30yrs in the police, and now in local authority (as well as at a ruthless investment bank which will remain nameless, and the BBC) I think my nice long break is a bit overdue. I pay 40% tax on my pension by the way. Have never been unemployed and never asked for anything from the state by way of handouts. Lucky? sheer applicaion? I'll let others judge. I worked hard....still work hard and am often at my desk well before start time and well after finish time, often work through my lunch.

I have been punched, kicked, spat upon and sworn at for years.....but that was by my wife as I left for work each day.

I have to sit on the fence with this, and that is why I have a crack in my arse....it makes it more comfy. But there are some hard workers in public service who do not get high pay. There is also weak management which seems incapable of winkling out the time servers, malcontents and shiftless idlers. I don't have to work, but I choose to do so. I am 55, not in best of health, but can show a clean pair of heels to some of the younger members in my office. I go the extra mile.

So, as I was saying, here is where my PS Pension and PS salary goes, I am there now and enjoying every bloody minute of it!
