UK: Anyone keep personal protection in their car?

To summarise,

some tw@ts tried to make a beeline for my car whilst I was stationary at lights. Saw them out the corner of my eye, lights changed and off I went.

They ran the whole length of the street and i saw them in my rear view mirror.

I was so peeved, my wife had to talk me down and stop me from driving back and seeing if they had some sort of a problem.

With the weather improving and roofs going down, what i mean to say does anyone here keep anything for personal protection?

I don't believe in utopia, crime is rife.

Aluminium bat, gold club? who knows...

A large screwdriver in the side compartment of my door. It would work the same as a knife, but I wouldnt get a prison sentence if caught with it.

Get caught, and it's illegal to carry anything in the car that can be used as a weapon (i.e. baseball bat etc). They should be locked in the boot where you can't get to them if provoked!! Crazy, but true!! I was only talking this over at the weekend with a mate who is in the police force. I questioned about carrying a Samurai sword to a martial arts demo and she said as long as it was in a case and locked in the boot I was OK. If the police found it in the car with me I could get in trouble!

Saying that, house keys can make a good weapon!

My wife was actually subjected to this a year ago when twats had followed her out of a store then tried to box her into a slot. Fortunately she saw it coming and drove out another slot, floored it and vanished

But in general 'No' - If I can't drive off from a situation they can have the car. Life is too short and more valuable.

Perhaps I've learnt too much from friends around the globe about the consequences of resisting carjacking where you get killed.

I get full invoice value back, so they can have it ....

I couldn't do that over principal!! If I had the opportunity I'd make sure they couldn't drive again!!

Talking of carrying knives or similar, how many of you think you could actually use one in an attack? Having one and using one are two very different things!!

On this subject, what do you do with your car keys if your car is left at home during the day or when you go to bed? Breaking into houses to steel the keys of your car is on the increase again! :x

Back to the OP topic, if I'm travelling through a large city I would probably close the roof to be honest!

Actually, thinking about it, on the new Z4, don't keep the key fob in the dash! Keep it in your pocket. Get out with the engine running and let them drive it off! They would have a shock a few meters up the road! :P

I'm with PVR, I value my life much more highly than a car.

But, if you were to keep a large Maglite in the car it would be less aggressive looking than a baseball bat (but more effective)

Not worth it... you never know what they're carrying. That's all well and good assuming I don't lose my temper.

Anyway, a good chance to post one of my favorite martial arts clips (teachings), sure you have all seen it, but always good:

NSFW, although that is where I first saw it!

I think I'm stupid enough to. I grew up with 3 brothers and we use to all fight over the smallest things. But these fights always got out of hand. We'd pick up anything to attack each other with. Golf clubs, cricket bats a garden fork!! I was even once smacked over the head with a plant pot. We didnt want to kill each other, just prove that we werent scared of each other.
We had a saying "hit or be hit". I dont have to be provoked too hard now to want to fight :(

HI gannet,

they can have the car, I'll willingly hand my keys over. BUT the worry for me is if they hurt my wife or threaten to go the extra mile.

I'm a black belt in Shotakan Karate and have some MMA training. but even so.

A distant relative of mine's family was tied up, tortured and their RS4 was taken along with 20k worth of goods. All in their own home..

Ok - that is different.

My home is a fortress though, and I do have "other" items there.

THIS

Not worth the risk IMO. If they see you with a weapon then they're more likely to use whatever weapon they're carrying themselves. Most folk like that are too scared to actually use their weapon and it's mostly just for show, but they'd certainly been encouraged to use it if you show them yours.

I'm signing up for a trial session of Krav Maga though, sounds a good laugh and could be useful if the worst happens...

Someone tried to jack me driving home from a VX220 Wales run. 2 Cars tried to box me in at some red traffic lights on a 2-lane carriageway in Wrexham in broad daylight (thankfully i was in the right lane). Chav got out of car in front and just looked as though he was dropped off and proceeded to walk past me. Next thing his arm is over the window trying to grab the keys.

I grabbed his hand, lifted it and smacked it back down onto the window... Heard a nice snapping noise and he started screaming... The keys dropped into the footwell. I Quickly started the car and left 2 nice 11's whilst running the lights on the opposite side of the road to get away. :driving:

After looking in the mirror there was another guy also waiting to jump in the car :o

Never felt so much adrenaline in my life - scary stuff. Remember people, when stopping at lights, remember what your instructor said!! "Tyres and tarmac"... Saved my car for sure.

Beancounter1980, WHERE DID THIS HAPPEN! :o

i would say no to weapons, my brother was stabbed in scotland for no reason and nearly died, just some random drunken dick. i have no doubt that if i ever saw the guy who did it i wouldnt hesitate to leave him in a ditch for the rats as he only got 4 years. the law did us proud :headbang:

anyway, if people are going to rob your car off you they are more than likely to be carrying with the intent on using it if things get hairy. just hand the car over and deal with it through the police.

if like you say they went for the missus i would with no doubt risk my life and kill the fcukrs that tried anything like that. id probably use the car to do it 'vinnie jones head in the door style'.
i have done unarmed combat training with the army, disarming people or helping them to stab/shoot themselves but i would never bother with it, its all a bit bruce willis. a good old geordie kiss should sort them out :P

Heres the law in the UK
Criminal Law Act 1967
Section 3.
Use of force in making arrest, etc.
— (1) A person may use such force as is reasonable in the circumstances in the prevention of crime, or in effecting or assisting in the lawful arrest of offenders or suspected offenders or of persons unlawfully at large.

So the test is always one of reasonableness. UK case law is full of what is reasonable and indeed what is unreasonable in using force to prevent a crime. Use of what is considered unreasonable often 'hits' the headlines when an apparently innocent person ends up in prison for using what the law pereceives as excessive force either to prevent a crime or protect their person, family and property.

We indeed live in strange times in the UK...... :(

As I mentioned earlier, this is a good point of the key-less start function of the comfort pack I hadn't really thought about. The fact that keys aren't in the ignition!
