Ugly wing mirrors on new BMWs

I was in my local BMW dealer last at their 5 series preview when I noticed that the wing mirrors on all new BMWs have changed into these big fat ugly things. On an X6 this isn't obvious, but on the 1 series and 3 series they just look awful. Instead of tapering toward a tip, they are now effectively just square. The only car I could see that wasn't affected was the M3 they had in the showroom.

Is this due to some new EU legislation - because it's definitely not been done for style? Can anybody shed any light on it for me?

Thanks

Yep new EU regs says that they have to be in proportion to the size of the vehicle or something...

EVO mag commented on it recently when reviewing a new Bentley (or Rolls) that the size of the wing mirror was the size of a laptop screen :o

Something coming into force in 2011 - as EVO puts it:

Also, the silly door mirrors need to be junked immediately as they're so huge they seriously hinder front three-quarter visibility. They're the result of some bureaucratic nonsense which demands (from 2011) that mirrors are sized to match the car, and on something as big as the Ghost that means they need to be as big as a laptop.
