My Z4 that I got about 8months or so ago and just realized it was SUPER low on oil. When I first got it and after it sitting for a month or 2 it wouldn't start. Finally got it running and changed the oil immediately. Since then I've put about 4.5k miles on it. Yesterday I noticed a lifter tick after a spirited drive... which was odd because it had done it but usually when it was cold. In the morning I bought a liquid moli lifter additive and noticed the oil was not visible on the dip stick. (really wishing I had replaced the oil lever sensor when I first got it, but it had/has so many things that need to be replaced). I added about 4.5-5 quarts to the car before it was back to normal.
It sounds good now but I'm so worried I've caused some severe damage to the engine. Crazy I asked the previous owner (my old roommate if it burns oil) he said yes but nothing significant. 1quart per 1k miles is pretty significant.
Currently I have been using 5w 30 but I've heard that using a 10w 40 really helps with oil consumption with these engines.
