Tyres - what would you do?

Have been reading about RFT v non RFT. The car I've bought has them fitted. All have decent tread so some life in them yet. However, being an old guy, I like to take my time, treat the car with respect and enjoy a relaxed comfortable ride. Don't fancy having my spine broken on a Sunday morning.

Should I take the hit and change? Prices for Tyre's suggested on the forum aren't crazy prices - so what do you think.

Thanks.

If it were me I would run them until they need changing or until the ride bothers you enough to want to change them !

It depends how you are getting on with the RFT's I suppose? Personally I found they made the car very twitchy on some of my favourite local roads, borderline dangerous actually and crashed like hell. If yours are tolerable maybe run them down but you will find a massive improvement with non-RFT's.

IMO run flats ruin the driving experience of the car. Change them at the earliest opportunity and enjoy a much nicer, more comfortable and better handling car.

Changing to non rfts, (Vredestein Ultrac Vortis) all around transformed my car from something I thought had been misaligned through an accident, yes that's how bad it was! to a predictable solid handling much more comfortable and enjoyable car. Just make sure you get a can of stuff to pump up tyres with if you ever get a flat. Don't worry about it, several new cars these days have a can of tyre stuff instead of a spare.

I had run flats on mine when I got it and had them for almost 3 years I knew they were not great but put up with them.

Changed to none run flats a couple of months ago now and can honestly say I should have taken the advice on here earlier. The car is so much better without them less tram lining, far smoother ride and so much more grip in the wet. I would say change them if you can you will be amazed by the difference.

Get shot and put the tyres up for sale either on here or ebay. Mr Wilks might even be interested.

Depending on what you manage to get for them, a few burnouts while you wait for your non-runflats to arrive might be the best solution (read: most fun).

Aside from that, I'd echo what Spikey said.

I wouldn't jump into a fresh set of 17inch rubber until you have got a grasp of the car & if you plan to spend some time on the forum that could mean a certain amount of "modding" may take place
Purely my own take Lee but as much as i like the turbines the car would have to be on 18's for me 8)
Doubt you would notice any difference in comfort but aesthetically you certainly would :driving:
Around £380 for a set of 4 new Vredestein non runflat tyres 18inch staggered fitment is more than reasonable , in fact probably similar to 17's in price ?
Just need to find a decent set of 108's

IMO make sure you get a set with decent rim protection. I shod mine with Falkens and while a wonderful performer they offer zero protection. No matter HOW careful you are you are going to get curbing without.

Hadn't clicked it was the turbine guy, as Andy says take your tine, but 18's are the way forward

From one old guy to another get rid of the RFT's. I ditched mine within a month of buying the car, fitted it with Vredstein Ultrac Vortis, Like night and day . No tyre noise, uneven roads no longer loosened my fillings, and the car went where I wanted it to go. It made the drive what I hoped it would be. Go for it you won't look back.

What non run flat tires you recommending for z4 3.0si roadster...?

Where to get 'can of stuff' ?

Thanks

16 oz can of slime on Ebay for £9.00 for the puncture seal, be aware nothing will seal bad rips or sidewall damage. For tyres I have replaced 18" Bridgestone Potenza run flats for Vredestein Ultrac Vorti standard tyres and they are terrific, the ride is much improved with no tramlining or bad road surface jarring. I went for the XL version which offers a slightly tougher wall and a distinct rim protection which a lot of forum members swear by.

Agreed, but RFTs won't help then either. I suffered a sidewall gash in one tyre on my last 3 series with RFTs, the car was undriveable, had to be recovered; was immobilised for a week as there were no tyres the right size. What a complete PITA. Bloody hate them.

I changed them as soon as was practically possibly and sold my RFTs with a few mm's left for silly money. More than worth it!

+1 for Vreds and Slime. Ring compressors are good too.

Thanks for answer. Just quick question. Will premium brands of tires like bridgeston, goodyear, pireli perform better then Vredestein?

You can clearly see they have some of them better specs in terms of fuel consumtion and noise plus wet condition ...

Thank you

Got Vreds on my Supra and they are well worth the money. Continentals are also magnificent.

If the RFT's are getting on your nerves, you can either sell them or store them. As soon as I get my Zed, non RFT's are going on there.
