Tyres Tyres Tyres!

The specfic issue with MP4SS on the front and almost another other tyre on the rear is the heat up / grip profile is badly mismatched..that set up could vary from chronic understeer to (not in Nani’s hands) chronic oversteer..certainly the stability control system will be earning its keep..
Yet BMW say no issues?

B21 is being a tad alarmist, and whilst what he's saying isn't exactly untrue, for 99% of people for 99% of the time it really won't make any difference. Seriously B21 are you feeling okay? chronic understeer, are you saying that the car will just understeer at every corner....

and the G29 is fitted with MPSS....

The problem is that when cold /wet the MP4SS don’t grip..the rears will…with that knowledge please proceed as you wish..

So it’s not a 1% event by any means…

I just find it utterly perplexing that someone with a £30k+ sports car even entertains the concept…

If it was a ‘yoof’ in a beaten up Corsa…

If you keep asking peoples view for approval then you can’t blame someone for pointing out the foibles of such a decision..

Funny, I had zero issue with cold MP4S's on the SL and no issues with front grip on the MPSS on the G29, however rear grip when cold, especially trying to put that torque through them, was an issue.

Glad for you ..not what Argyll Andy and several other G29 owners reported…

Anyway I’ve expressed my view and it’s logic

I can sleep soundly now

If folks want to penny pinch in that knowledge / viewpoint great

I would say try it and you will see for yourself whether it is possible or not to use 2 different brands of tires on the Z4. In any case, I won't do that again.

Why not just get a fresh pair of MP4SS?

Then all wheels will slide the way it was intended

Why they fitted MP4SS is a mystery

Shocking when wet and cold

Great for summer blasts in Europe

Thanks for all the input guys. Very much appreciate the discussion.

B21 has posted a link which the headline is don't mix brands, however if you read further on in that article it states,

'However, if mixing becomes unavoidable due to a lack of availability or budget constraints, then it’s possible to mix tyre brands and tread patterns – but only so long as drivers fit a pair of tyres with the same tread patterns and brands across the same axle. That means installing a pair of identical tyres on the rear axle, or a pair of identical tyres to the front'.

This was also the advice from my local BMW dealerships tyre specialist.

If money was no object, I would fit the same as currently on, Michelin PSS but these are at best £40 per corner more expensive than the GoodYears I am considering. I have a service due this month and an MOT along with a holiday to pay for in September to keep STMBO happy. As a pensioner any saving I can make is a bonus.

If anyone can find a pair of Michelin PSS rears fitted for under £500 please let me know.

[ref]Nanu[/ref], I'm really happy with the Goodyears, when I left home this afternoon to drive the 214 miles to Bristol, it was 14 C and raining. With cold rear tyres I decided to give them a little test, accelerating sharply while pulling out of a junction onto a main road, grip was there no shifting of the LSD, no drama, just traction

What I have noticed is that the fronts always heat up quicker than the rears, this probably explains why I've never had issues with the MPSS fronts and I have never explored the limit of front grip when the tyres are cold anyway.

How about just a tad over?

https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/cart/

They’re quoting on average £15 a tyre to fit

Hey... I didn't say that :P Anyway, I wouldn't put MPSS back on even if they were free :poke:

Sorry Sars, bloody wrong quotation thing again. I agree, wasn’t best pleased when the new one came with them and others just beforehand came with contis :headbang:

Well here is a turn up for the book.

I gave the same challenge to my local BMW dealership, Lloyds of Newcastle via the App. Two Michelin PSS rears, like for like for £500 or under and they said yes. They said they would fit them for that price if I was taking it to them for the MOT which I was anyway.

As a bonus, I got a call from the "expert" saying as the MOT and tyre fitting would take about two and a half hours, did I want to borrow the Z4 M40i currently being used by one of the management for a couple of hours to play with.

Sounds like a plan. They obviously think they can tempt me the demonstrator but they would have to pursued STMBO first as she is coming with me, so it wont happen :( .
