Tyres and kerbing

Hi,

I was talking about tyres to a Merc driver at work and the problems of avoiding kerbing...I find the Z4 a problem to judge (esp at the front ... don't know why they did not put the parking sensors on the front too !) ... anyway he stated that some brands of tyre have more of a lip/overhang which puts some rubber between the rim and the (potential) kerb and thus offers a degree of protection.

Any one else heard of this ?
 
A lot of brands do them, it's called a rim protector. You have to be careful though as some tyres in the same range have it and some don't - and you can get certain tyres where the same tyre comes in many versions including with/without rim protector.
 
There's various tyre markings
FP is the one I'm most familiar with - Flange Protection

apparently there is also
FR - Rim Protection
(FSL) - Flange Protection
MFS - Max Flange Shield
? RPB - Rim Protection Bar

Thanks for the link. So.. to take it one step further does anyone know whether / how good the popular Z4 tyres are for this sort of thing

i have the Vreidestein Setanza's (excuse spelling) with rim protectors, tyres are good grip wise as they were recomended on here, the rim protector makes the tyre wall look bigger somehow but i would rather have it than not
ps they wont stop kerbing just the light scuffs so you still need to be carefull
 
Well.. I have recently had replacement 108s so they are absolutely pristine. I want to keep them that way ....and as they say... every little helps !
 
Is there a recommended tyre that people have used which has rim prortection but around the falken 452 cost?

Falkens 452 have NO rim protection what so ever.

My Vredstein have pretty decent rim protection.. on par with Eagle F1's which was one of the main reasons i picked them.... especially on 19's which are so close to the road... you only need a pot hole to mark them.
 
I have to disagree on the vreds rim protection I find them useless but that will depend on track and rims, my csls have not benefited from the rims protector... The only way to keep them in good nick is to park carefully. I reverse park and put down the mirror, not that it helps when you're boxed in and need to get out :(
