Tyres: 452's, PS2's or Eagle F1's

About to step into the breach and order a spanking new set of 18" gunmetal Velocity alloys, but have hit a dilemma. Initially was going to fit Falken 452's on them as I'd seen a lot of forum members had them, however I also heard recently through another thread that they dont leave a great deal in terms of rim protection.

For an additional £200 I can choose either Michelin Pilot Sport 2's or Goodyear Eagle F1's, but my question is, is it worth it or will I be okay with the Falken's on the new rims?

Ordering later today so any advice appreciated. :)

452s are popular, but I believe a few have had issues (scrapes) due to the poor rim protection. The Eagle F1s are superb... in dry and wet, but hard to get hold of at the moment... which is why I'm now going to Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta - well regarded by those that use them... I'll have a comparison in a few weeks.

Couple points, if you shop it around you may get a better price on the Eagles... if the wheels are 225/40R18 I don't fancy your chances. The Vreds are very well priced, although also in short supply.

I think Mr Whippy has moved from 452s to F1s?

There are plenty of tyre discussions on here... which may account for the low response rate (not meaning to sound rude).

Thanks for the advice. They are indeed [hopefully] going to be 225/40/18 on the front, and 255/35/18 on the back.

Must admit, I've searched the forum and seen lots of thumbs up for the Falkens, but just wondered if anybody had every rated non-RFT's and if so what they preferred; hence my slightly lazy new thread

I shall look again....

Try searching for the brands and colloquialisms thereof... and don't forget to try "tires". Def worth looking at Vreds. I hope.

Just purchased some Eagle F1s.

Great rim protection.

They also offer the following (rearrange) "like road the stick glue to"

Yeah, that's the problem with all the tire threads. I don't think there is anyone (well maybe one or two people) that has used all three tires. There have been plenty that have used 452s and one or the other of the other two brands though.
My opinion is if you have the money go for the PS2's or the F1's (I have no experience on F1's just basing off what people have said on here). The 452's are great and will last a bit longer (tougher treadwear) but IMO aren't in the same league as PS2's. Which I would hope is the case :P The PS2's have been superb in all conditions on and off the track. The 452's did ok on the track, but I tended to slide a bit with them compared to the PS2's where I found I could enter a corner at a faster speed than the 452's allowed.
In the wet the PS2's still provide a bunch of grip.

I'm glad you made this thread, I'm at the point of needing new tires, and while I want to go with what I know (PS2's) I'm strongly considering the F1's (since they get rated neck an neck with PS2's) so that way when these questions come up I can make an objective post

Eagle F1's (Asymmetric model) is my choice.

Exactly; and when I'm about to sort out four new boots for my girl I want to make sure I get the performance and wear I want, along with the rim protection if I'm also going to fork out for some new wheels. On my Z3 I had Michelin PS2's which were great but pricey. Not tried the Eagle F1's or the 452s. Think I might search for some images to see exactly how they look once on the rim.

Half the reason the Falkens are so popular is because of the price, they are a good compromise between price and performance. Plus a lot of people move straight from the RFTs to the Falkens so this makes them feel very good in comparison.

If you can afford the F1s I'd go for them, they are a better tyre than the Falkens.

I had F1 GSD3's (Goodyear Eagle's) On my Old E36 and they where great ,much better than my Kuhmo's which are probably the most recommended budgetish tyres around?

Anyhows GSD3's.. are highly rated amoung m3 owners etc..So i presume there good

I've had GSD3s (on an E46) and they were good, but not made any more, and F1s and I'd be happy to recommend them.

What about Bridgestone Potenza RE040's ?

I've had GSD3's, original Pilot Sports and now the RE040's and the Bridgestones for my have been the best by far and not silly money. I know I'm currently on a fwd car but the principle isn't much different.

I'm looking to replace my tyres as i've convinced the GF that removing the RFT's to Non RFT's will result in better ride quality and handling, hope this is true.
I currently have 225/40/18 at the front but if i change that to 225/35/18 am going to encounter any problems :ie traction control giving false readings and also the TPM giving false readings any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone got any feedback regarding using Camskill and Black circles.

I've used Black Circles before. Very good service in my experience. Delivered to my local tyre fitter in good time and prices were good. My mate has an account with them so did it in his name and as he'd ordered through them before I got a discount too.
