Tyre wear and replacement tyres

Yes thats what i have been led to believe,,, especially after owning 3 X5,s for the last 8 or so years, and having to have 2 transfer boxes replaced [under warranty, thankfully], even with star marked tyres fitted...

Well that could be one reason, however any vehicle must be able to cope with up to a 12.0 mm difference between wheel diameters because of tyre wear, this is a reasonable and foreseeable real world failure scenario and engineers must, by statute, design and engineer accordingly.

That video actually explains a lot. However, real world usual motoring is it worth the extra £500 for star marked mitch star mark over the contis?

Guess Andy will give us a review. I suspect the handling won’t be as precise.

[ref]ori[/ref], yeah, definitely give you some feedback once I’ve tried them properly. Handling seems to be one of their big plus points. Much quicker turn in than the Michelin’s apparently. If I don’t like them it’ll only be a few months before they’re back off anyway

The problem with the review is it compared standard tyres and not the manufacturers star marked tyres which are different.

As I said, real world difference is probably tiny either way.

So did a quick check.

Rears have 5mm tread
Fronts have 5.5mm tread.

Miles 6,200 but mostly town and gentle motorway.

So assuming 9mm tread depth on new tyre, I think mine should last another 6,000 miles!?!?

About what I thought, only thing to factor in to your calculations is starting tread. I always though it was 8mm but the new Conti’s come with 7.4mm new but they’re not the worst in the tyre test Peter linked iirc the Bridgestones come with 6.6mm NEW

Yes,Tyre manufacturers have been sly in recent years. Not only increasing the price of tyres,but cutting back new thread a few years back,grin an average of 8 to 9mm down to 6.5/7/7.5 or 8mm, so anywhere between 1 as 1.5mm per most brands, depending on what they had to start with.
Really not fair,and something alot of people/car owners,were not aware of.

Yeah. Rescuing the tread starting depth is equivalent to using smaller packaging on food.

I’ve got ages on my tyres as during my recent incident bmw measured all my depths and said they are over 6mm.

Need to drive the car harder.

Just picked up this thread and find the tyre wear scary. My old e89 gave me 20k on the rears and half as much again on the fronts. Was expecting similar mileage out of the current ones on the G29. Sounds like I may be disappointed

I would be looking if there were any replacement RF's that gave a less harsh ride. Finding the Michelin’s about the same as the old Bridgestones.

[ref]Nanu[/ref], what pressure are you running in the G29? Having had both the options you’ve mentioned I wouldn’t even class them in the same ballpark. If your Michelin’s are comparable to your old Bridgestones there’s something not right imo

Running then as prescribed on the side of the foot panel which is 2.3 bar.

The ride is firmer than the 35is but I understand that is the nature of the beast and the larger tyres.

I found the 18" Goodyear F1 A3's RSC's that I fitted to the 435xd were better than the standard Bridgestone's RSC, however now that you've found the goo go for a more comfortable conventional tyre. Are you running 19" or 18" wheels?

I got something like 8,000 from the rears on my e89, so I reckon you'll be fine with the g29.

Andy mentioned not going above 3k revs, but I would imagine it's more the low down torque that wears the tyres quickly - quick starts from standstill or slow speed.

I'd give another vote for the Conti 7s - I haven't once come close to losing traction at the back since I put them on, but maybe I'm just not trying as hard as I did when the Michelins were on!

Like most, I'm not pushing my car anywhere near it's limits, but I'd still happily pay more for that 2% extra grip for when I make a mistake or encounter an unexpected situation.

The 3k revs were for the first 1200 miles while running it in, the rest has been a free for all as soon as the engine is heated up

And I’ll give feedback on the Conti’s after the NTNC500 next week
