Tyre sizes

I have a 2004 2.2i convertable. I require new tyres for the front.
The size currently on the car is 225/50/R16, but have been advised that I can put 225/55/R16 as an alternative. Is this correct, and what would be the consequence of having different tyre sizes on the front from the rear of the car?

Welcome to the forum!

That would make the tyre 22.5mm taller, so clearances will be tighter, but offhand I would think it would fit. The steering response will be a bit sloppier due to the taller sidewall. The ultimate lateral grip might be lower, also due to sidewall height. If you eventually put this size on the rear, you will effectively decrease the torque to the ground 10% due to the increased radius, and your speedometer will then read low instead of the high it probably reads now.

The higher ride height in front will alter the handling balance slightly, the front feeling a bit more unstable and vague. The rake will be visible to a sharp eye. Taller sidewalls will give a slightly more forgiving ride. Lateral grip may actually be improved on uneven surfaces.

I'm unsure if a significant difference in wheel height will confuse the DSC system. It certainly must tolerate some difference, but I don't know if there's a limit to the difference it will tolerate, or if it doesn't care at all.

bcworkz,

thanks for the reply, in actual fact what i have done is put the bigger tyres on the rear, this seems to have eliminated the occasional flashing of the DSC light, and the appearance of the car looks altogether better.
