Tyre recommendations?

I replaced mine last year

After a bit of research I went for the Falken Azenis FK510 tyres

Consistently 2nd/3rd in all the group tests and about half the price of the PS4

Been very impressed with them so far .. they might not last as long as the Michelin’s but as I only do about 4K a year it didn’t matter to me

Being the sport model, it calls for (and has)
225/40 R18 - front
255/35 R18 - rear

Generally speaking, I'm a diehard Michelin guy, always found them to be the smoothest/quietest ride. I have Michelins for all my cars (summer and winter sets)

But I know this car is different, rides different, handles different, etc.
Presently, it has Continental ExtremeContact Sport's that came with it - and they are past their prime.
I need to find my baby a new set of slippers.

What Brand/Model do y'all use/recommend?

Michelin Pilot Sport 4.

I contacted Michelin and asked for their advice on their tires (tyres).

Here is the Dialog:

MY INQUIRY TO MICHELIN:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Been a Michelin customer for decades - have both winter and
summer tires for ALL my cars - NEVER disappointed. Hell, I should get
commission the way I talk your tires up all the time.... But now I have a
new toy (er, ah, Car) that has unique tire requirements - everyone is
telling me to go with the Pilot Sport 4s tires, which I understand to be
’high performance summer tires’ and would expect a rough ride and less than
stellar performance in spring and fall (no plans to drive this car in
winter) NOW - having stated the above... _not into spinning tires or taking
corners on two wheels. looking for ’touring’ characteristics (quiet and
smooth) with the ability to perform well during spirited driving, but not
overly aggressive.

What do you (the Manufacture/Experts) recommend?

RESPONSE FROM MICHELIN:

Regarding your email stating:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Vehicle in Question is a
2006 BMW Z4 3.0si
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for your interest in MICHELIN® tires! We’re happy to help you find the right tire for your specific driving needs.

Thank you for providing your vehicle information. We would highly recommend the Pilot Sport A/S 3+. The tire carries a 45,000 mile warranty and is an Ultra-High Performance Sport tire.

The ratings on this tire are:

Wear 10
Fuel Efficiency 9
Handling 8
Braking 8
Comfort 9

The Pilot Sport 4 S is an excellent summer tire choice with a 30,000 mile warranty. When you have a summer tire, you would not be able to drive it when temperatures are consistently 45 degrees or below since they would lose their traction.

The ratings on this tire are:

Wear 9
Fuel Efficiency 9
Handling 9
Braking 10
Comfort 8

...the fitment really depends on how often you want to drive your 2006 BMW Z4 Roadster 3.0si w/Sport Pkg. The performance is excellent on either tire but the biggest difference is the summer tire compared to the all-season tire.

Would be interested to find out how those 30,000 mile and 45,000 mile warranties work...

Would even be interested in those A/S3 tyres myself, but they don't seem to be available this side of the pond.

I've got a set of Michelin Pilot Sports on my M and they seem to be pretty good for most road conditions. How ever, when I replace the tyres, I will be switching over to Falken's . I've been using them on every car I've owned since 2008. I think I had a set of 912's on my E30 Alpina and I had their "premium" sports model on my Impreza P1.

I have found that Falken's are really good in the wet and inspire confidence. Price wise, they tend to be cheaper than the other top brands. My Scooby got a good amount of life out of the set it had, which amazed me as the previous set I had on it was a set of Continental Sports Contact 2, which were winning all the rewards for being such a great tyre, yet they ran out of life pretty quickly and that was without doing any track days.

The only other tyre I've been really impressed with, was a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's . My dad used these one a few of his cars and he swears by them. I think the premium price tag goes against it. While it's important to buy quality safety items, I don't think the difference in price between them and a mid level brand, it's not the same as how much better they are.

I have just gone with the Goodyear Eagles F1, I got a really good deal on them,, £150 cheaper than the Michelins !!!
