Tyre question

Hi guys, I'm getting new front tyres and have decided on the Michelin Pss. My car is an m roadster on standard wheels. I will be replacing the Falcons on the rear soon as well.

A search on black circles gives recommended size of 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear and my local tyre guy said the same so I ordered the fronts however I've now seen that standard fit is 225/45 and 255/40. Ive also noted that you can't get 255/35 rears only 255/40.

Has anyone got any advice on this? Could I run 225/40 255/40? one benefit of the 40 profile fronts that I've ordered is that they are 20 quid cheaper than 45's

If it helps, ive just had 255/35's put on the rears this morning and its thrown the speedo out a little but 'wow!' it accelerates a lot harder now. Very noticeable in 3rd and 4th.

Ive got GPS in the car and at 50 in 6th it used to be 48mph but now its 46. At 90 on the speedo its doing 82/83.

I've still got the existing 225/45's on the front but will be changing those soon for 225/40's once they wear down a little more.
 
That's a no-no for me mate ,
The M car is obviously set up on 225 45 18 fronts & 255 40 18 rears & whilst switching the sizes down to 40/35 won't do any harm or damage it will increase arch gap & decrease your ride quality & possibly the handling

I've noticed the ride is a bit harsher, no difference in handling (this is on the road) and the 35's don't look too bad under the arches. The one other thing i've yet to see is the increase in mpg as the wheel will be spinning faster to maintain the previous speed of the larger diameter tyre.

Hhhmmmm , not exactly enlightening :?
As we all know tyre choice & size is very subjective , if you have a reason or purpose to gain then fair enough but if you drop off the OEM sizes to save a few ££ then i don't get it

I wasn't drawing attention to the fact of saving money, but more about the changes to the driving characteristics. So far i'm happy with changing from 40's to 35's, we'll see when i have to fill up though :o

Wasn't meaning you :oops: the OP has dropped sizes to save £20 a tyre :cry: that i don't get on a high end motor :?
 
After buying 2 sets of Michelin super sports for my car
I'd recommend these babies anyway
Some say bad in wet, well in a year I've driven in rain twice haha
But drove hard the other day to see n great
I digress
Tbh 5% of the tyres width being added /list off side wall really won't show unless 30s as off 255 its 12mm

So just to round off the thread, I've had the OEM size PSS fitted on the fronts. I am very pleased I decided to go for them and can confirm grip is far superior to the falken 452's that came off. They look good too and ride comfort is slightly improved. Tram lining has also stopped. They have given the rear end a slightly loose feel which is very progressive and controllable and I quite like (I'm guessing due to still having the 453's on the back).
