Tyre profiles

I'm looking to put 18" wheels on my car this year not, sure if I'm going with standard BMW staggered set up, ie 108's , MV2's , elipsoids etc or aftermarket non staggered. What I want to know is on the staggered fitment the profiles on the rear wheels are lower than the fronts but on the non staggered the profiles are the same, does anybody know why this is?
 
In simplistic terms the wider the tyre the lower the profile has to be to keep the circumference of the wheel the same. This is done so the speedometer and odometer readings remain accurate.
