Tyre pressure survey

Hello everyone.
Tyre pressures.
I can't remember seeing much on tyre pressure figures ever since i joined this forum about three years ago. Perhaps only as a secondary matter on wheel size and rubber compound choices, so I thought I'd ask people here.
It all comes after i spent last weekend playing with different values of tyre pressure, front and rear, to what I started with. My Z4MR is virtually all OEM and from factory at 32k miles apart from having removed the front strut alignment pins to marginally reduce understeer. My original values were 2.2 bar all round. The car always felt a little crashy and unrefined at the rear on anything other that perfect tarmac. However, the slightly higher-than-it-should-be pressures at the rear gave me a little peace of mind about not losing the back end unexpectedly around corners. Yes, I confess, i am not quite Ayrton Senna! At the end of my experiment i settled for 2.1 bar at front and 2.0 bar rear. To my delight the car feels more planted, comfortable and agile in a more GT kind of way, with a rear axle that works with you instead of bouncing over potholes and hemorrhaging traction even on the straight line.

I'd like to hear what other people are doing and how that affects, for the better or worse, their own Z4s.

30.5psi all round on my cheapo gauge, which I believe equates to about 32psi. I did try 34psi and the ride was ruined.

Well done for experimenting a bit. :thumbsup:
 
Run mine slightly over recommended, 34psi front, 37psi rear. 3.0i on 18" non run flats. Seems alright to me.

37! Ok.... 🤔 how is the innermost wear of your rear tyres? Are you on standard springs and dampers?

well, whatever is standard on an early 3.0i. no noticeable inners wearing faster than the edges, but I don't do that many miles really. Most miles are track miles, for which I run 34psi front and 36psi rear, when the tyre is hot. though again, that's on a trackday tyre, so not necessarily comparable...
 
[ref]brillomaster[/ref], yup, agreed. Track tyres are very different thing.

[ref]road warrior[/ref], 30psi seems to be a bit like a sweet spot by the feel of it.
 
Given it’s an M, they run different pressures than the 3.0 & others

There’s lots of comments that running at higher pressures on an M makes it more skittish & have to agree - these are the factory equivalents of bar in psi & seem to be lower than many are running.

I have about 4 different tyre gauges, though only use the two which agree with my mates gauge he uses for his racecar.

After my experiment I can only agree with the skittish comment. Ive gone as low as 30psi in the rears and stayed there. The car has better traction on broken tarmac and feels more communicative. I haven't pushed it hard enough as to gauge how it feels on the limit. I'm not brave enough lol :w00t:
 
I’ve also noted over the years that for every 5 degrees general ambient temperature rise or fall ‘from cold’ in the garage, causes a small variance in the tyre pressure itself... eg as summer approaches, I end up letting a little air out in some month’s & visa versa when winter’s coming.
