Tyre pressure - please help

Hello,

Am a newbie with little technological details of cars, so grateful for any help.

My 2004 z4 left wheel axle was recently fixed after driving through horrendous belgium roads - it was fixed by a legit bmw dealer.

Now two days after this the typre pressure monitor on the dashboard has come up (it is red with an exclamation mark in the middle and picture number 8 in this link http://www.autoevolution.com/news/how-to-read-the-dashboard-lights-1370.html ). What do I do now? How do I correct this? Is it still safe to drive?

Very grateful for some help which is relayed in a non-technical manner.

welcome to the forum.

Either you have a puncture or a sensor failure which would be worrying as it uses the ABS system.

Check all your tyre pressures asap. If you are on run flats with a puncture you can drive but dont exceed 50 miles and 50 mph before getting it sorted.
 
As Gannet says....


To reset the light press and hold the button on your console the one with the same symbol as the warning light. the light should go out.

But again to reiterate, check all your pressures first.

many thanks guys, sorry for the basic question but how do I actualy check tyre pressure on a z4 which has run flats? I didn't think run flats had pressure?

Basically the only difference between a runflat and normal tyre is that the run flat has rigid tyre walls to compensate for a flat. The general construction of the tyre+wheel is the same so you pump them up the same, and you check the pressure the same way for both.

Check the pressures are all correct as per the handbook then reset the warning light. If one of the pressures is down top it up, then check if it deflates again.

excellent, again sorry for a further question byt the bmw dealer who fixed the wheel has forgotten to give me back my black leather pouch with the manual, any idea what level the tyre pressure should be at?

thanks for the intro, not sure I understood that part in bold - which light exactly? is it the hazrd light which is a triangle? by console do you mean the dashboard where the light pressure sensor is on - as ever apologies if these questions sound a bit retarded.
 
No problem, pressures depends on what engine you have:

2.2i - 2.5i = Front 30psi | Rear 33psi
3.0i = Front 33psi | Rear 36psi

on your centre console under the aircon controls you'll see the reset button (it has the same symbol as the warning light):

1) start the engine.
2) Hold that reset button down until the warning symbol in the instrument cluster lights yellow (3-4 seconds).
3) Drive as normal.

if it lights again and the pressures have stayed constant you have a problem somewhere.
 
all fine now, the red tyre pressure light has gone off - had a bit of a mare at the pterol station as initaly the readings were all in bar and thought 3.3 bars = 33psi, fortunatrly, there was a conversion button on hand!

as a newbie on here am very grateful for all the help - thanks - I just hope now the light stays off!
 
the pressures are listed in both psi and bar on the inside of your drives door, on the sill.
