Tyre options for genuine 19” CSL on an MC

Hi there

I’ve just had a set of genuine CSLs refurbished and am wondering what the best tyre options would be for them. They’re the stepped 8.5 and 9.5 x 19.

I think the standard fitment from BMW is 235/35/19 and 265/30/19?

The car is not lowered so is this slightly larger size an option to perhaps get a little more comfort and rim protection?

245/35/19 and 275/30/19?

Would they work ok on standard suspension?

I’m after every percentage gain of ride comfort I can get!

Sorry to say that it depends on your car and how good condition your rear suspension is. Some people had rubbing on 265/30 (so 275/30 would rub to), but others insist their car had zero rubbing on the same tyres.

Mine went through 3 wheel arch liners on each side on standard suspension with 265/30r19 PS2s before I went back to standard 18" 224M but with 265/40r18s (SportContact M3, Michelin PS2 and Supersports)...which have never rubbed, even after I fitted lowered suspension (except for in 2 spots at the Nurburgring where there are heavy compressions).

However, if you want to keep the same rolling radius as OE 18" wheels then the rears need to be 265/35r19 (only 2mm/0.6% difference vs 12mm/3.7% difference of the 265/30r19) - also don't forget that different tyres have different definitions of what a 265 width tyre will actually measure and what wheel protection they offer. Similar goes for the front sizing as +1 would require 225/40r19 to stay consistent.

I’m really after people’s first hand experience if anyone knows having had this set up.

It seems a mixed bag of heresay about no problems or rubbing on lowered cars. So trying to get some feedback on people who have tried this.

I've had that set-up as I said above, and others have posted that they had / not had issues with the 265/30r19, 265/35r19 and 275/30r19 rear size. That's why I said it depends on YOUR car and how tired/fresh the dampers/springs are.

My arch liner damage was mostly from 25,000 miles a year of road use (Liverpool to London and back weekly, plus Welsh, Scottish, Dales, Lakes weekend hoons). It didn't happen on UK track days.

If you don't drive it hard then the standard 265/30r19 + 235/35r19 should cause no issues. My only other concern was the increase in ride harshness due to the thinner/stiffer sidewalls (on a Z4MC, as the Z4MR rides a bit softer).
 
I ran my car on 265/30/19s at the rear for a bit and had no rubbing at all so I’m surprised you did at all.

I was really asking if the 275s would knowing that, on mine at least, the 265s are fine.
 
My MC came with a set of 19" CSL Reps that were identically sized to OE ones, even with the same offsets. Tyres were 235/35 on the front and 265/30 on the rear. It was also on coil-over suspension so much lower than standard.

Once I got the spacers off and the ride height as high as it would go (still about 18mm lower than standard) there was no rubbing!
 
I had OEM CSLs on my MC. PS4 rubber lowered on B12s I think and they just about made it within the arch liner. Just ! No spacers.

Either way, 19s are a harsher ride.
