Tyre Longevity

Looking at the tyres on my mums 61 plate Kia Soul, the offside front tyre's sidewall has started cracking a little. The car is only a little over 4 years old is this usual for cars that live outside?

We never changed any of the tyres on her previous car (Hyundai Getz) which we owned for the best part of 7 years.

The tyre in question is a cheap brand and im not even sure it was original to the car. The car has covered 14k and is used primarily for town driving.

What are peoples experiences with tyre longevity?

Hi, mrs smartbear had a kia soul a few years ago & had the same experience with the tyres perishing (i think they were nexen?)
I've never had tyres age so badly so can only assume its just this particular brand which appear to be rubbish! I certainly wouldnt buy them again :o

Thanks smartbear im pretty sure the rears are Nexens, I need to go and double check the fronts. If one has had it im sure we will replace the lot for Michelins.

Just out of curiosity, did mrs smartbear ever have an issue with the accelorator peddle not responding at times:

At random times and infrequently there is a lack of response from the accelerator pedal when gently pressing down.

4 years is a long time for a tyre and yes, it probably would start cracking after that amount of time being outside. Usual causes are UV rays and tyre blackening products.

When I bought my car the vredestein were cracked on the outside edges and they were just 3 years old at the time of purchase.

She had the 1.6crdi diesel engine & it was always good with no mechanical issues, think she only did about 18k in it before she sold it & bought her z3.
The only problem was with corrosion on the wheels which the dealer replaced without quibbling.
