Tyre exploded going around a hairpin bend.

So much for getting to Chepstow this week end. Took the Zed out for a quick warm up on Friday evening and this was the result.

Fortunately I was only going about 30 mph but I had my foot on the floor in second exiting a up hill harpin bend. Thought the springs had gone for a second. Happily a bit of opposite lock kept the Zed and me out of the wall a couple of feet to my left No plans to try this again any time soon. No idea what could have caused such a total failure the other tyre looks like new. :?

Glad you managed to keep it out of the wall. It could have been far worse at speed on a motorway.
Check the date of manufacture of the tyre and look for surface fissures. I suppose it may have been under / over inflated if it hadn't been checked for a while or the tyre fitter was a little overzealous with the compressor!
 
Wow glad you and the car are OK

Another reminder of the need to check boots regularly - although if this was a failure on a good tread properly inflated tyre there may be structural reasons for failure

Hasn't had a puncture repair before John?
 
If it's significantly under inflated the sidewall does more work and just gets to hot, compound starts to degrade and de-laminate and eventually bursts.

Glad you're okay and that you weren't doing 70 mph on the M5 to Bristol
 
Must have been very scary. Need to check my tyre pressures again. Never had a tyre go on me and hope I never do!

What are people running these days. I know I am quite soft at 30 front and 32 back on 224's.
 
Another classic cause of such failures aside under inflation is prior internal structural damage. Comes from big potholes or pushing up kerbs. Pinches the cords and causes them to fail.
Usually evidenced by a bulge on the tyre before it goes when next under real load (hairpin would be good).

Did it myself on a trailer - caught a petrol pump base, just pinched the sidewall. An hour later it blew with 2 ton of Jeep on a ,ountain road.

Important to check inside walls for damage, not just pressure...
 
I had similar last year with my vreds, I had a slow puncture for a few week then it caused the sidewall to fatigue and blow going round a sharp bend down a country lane. The tyre luckily held up for me to limp it half a mile to a pub
 
It may be the poor photo quality, but the side wall looks like it has tiny stress cracks near the split.
 
Close call Busyg. Glad you and your Zed are unscathed. I had a n/s/r blow - out in my 530i Sport Touring at 70+mph on the M6 a few years back and only just managed to keep control and get onto the hard shoulder....definite brown trouser moment ! :o What brand and size of tyre was it ?
 
To me it looks as though the inner wall was going thread bare ?
I had a Pug like that once. Tyres looked great from the outside but the inner walls had gone and it started hissing air.

As long as you and the car are alright its just a trackday blip

Its hard to tell from the pics, are you running extra camber? How old are the tyres?

Camber is standard ///M. Tyre was pretty new. Done less that 2k The one on the other side still looks like new and pressure is good in that. Would have expected the light to come on, if this one had significantly less pressure in it, for any distance. Having said all that it sure looks like it was running low pressure for a few miles and that took out the side wall. :?

Sounds like a manufacturing defect in that case, unless the inside wall picked up some damage from a track kerb or some debris. Id email the manufacturer demand free tyres for life! :rofl:
