Tyre choice- Pilot Sport 3 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2

Hi all,

Getting new tyres fitted next week - wondered if anyone had opinions based on their own experiences regarding tyre choice - am moving away from run-flats!

Would love to hear from owners who have either fitted their cars with Michelin Pilot Sport 3's or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's as can't really make my mind up about the two! Ideally looking for great grip and feel, but at the same time trying to minimise tyre noise!

Thanks!

This probably doesn't help much but I'm facing the same dilemma. My research so far has shown that the Goodyear's are generally cheaper, though Costco have priced me at £460 for four Michelin ps3 on my original 18's.

I have noticed though that the Goodyear's are rated significantly quieter than most other tyres!!

I've ran various flavours of continental sport contacts for years on cars and loved them but they don't seem too popular on here from my initial searches.

I had the sport contact 5's on my factory JCW mini - they were great, but I don't think they're best suited for heavier/more powerful cars.

Goodyears are cheaper - but from what I've read, have software sidewalls and the steering feel isn't that great because of this - although they are rated quieter by 3db - tbh I don't think it will make too much of a difference as the sound rating is an external reading and 3db is not much. I think a lot of those ratings are a little bit like manufactures mpg claims, best to go with others experiences :)

Michelins seem to be the best choice - offering great grip and feel, and even longer tyre life, but they're slightly more expensive.

Was just wondering if anyone had the experience of owning either and if they could confirm - but I think I've just made my mind up!

I went with the mitchelin pilot sport 3 on my 35is.

I have the 19 inch wheels, were fitted with the standard runflats.... ride was pretty harsh & bouncy on any irregular surface, not a lot of confidence on quicker corners or if the surface was poor - the back end let go very easily.

Changed after a few weeks to the PS3's, cost was about £1k (from memory). Ride was transformed, bit softer, bit quieter, much better grip.

Well worth the change.

When you drive away after swapping the tyres over it will feel like a huge difference (much much less harsh) - but after a few weeks you just get used to it.

Not had either on my Z4 so can not comment on handling, but a few weeks ago I changed all four P-Zeros on my daily driver to Eagle F1 Asymmetric.

The big difference was the noise level, even the good lady noticed. Eagles are a quiet tyre, the difference was quite surprising.

Cheers

Mark

I haven't tried the Michelin PSS to compare but the Goodyears are a huge improvement over the Continentals IMHO.

I chose the Goodyears over the Michelins on price in the end, The PSS seemed to get better reviews on here but in the end price won! I'm happy with the Goodyears and they're lasting much better than I'd expected too.

Chris do you mind sharing why you feel Goodyears are better than continentals? I've had a lot of continentals on different cars but the only direct comparison I've been able to make on a single car is with a set of kumhos. That's when I realised how much difference a tyre makes and went back to contis.

Also worth considering a wildcard choice  I'm currently running Uniroyal RS3s on the front of my Z 235 35 19 & can't fault them on motorway or backroads in either wet or dry .
My son also fit a set of 4 to his R32 & has covered around 500miles , he can't believe the difference from the Falkens he removed , very grippy , very quiet & Uniroyal is owned by Michelin so the pedigree is there

same customer satisfaction rating as the Goodyears http://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/goodyear/eagle-f1-asymmetric-2/225-40-r18-92y-60460

Just had the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's fitted all around this morning at £470 all inclusive via blackcircles.com.

Go to say there's an immediate difference in steering feel that I felt was lacking before, I can actually feel the road and the car's traction, they're also a load quieter!

Not really had the chance to wear them in yet, but they seem great initially!

Will double-check tyre pressures as well, as they've been filled at 32psi all round at the garage, when the door sticker asks for 36psi on the fronts and 39psi on the rears. Suppose in internal volume terms, they are the same as the run-flats so the same pressures would seemingly apply?

Well in my opinion they seem have a lot more grip, perhaps a little quieter, inspire a bit more confidence and generally just make it nicer to drive.

The decibel scale is not linear so an insignificant sounding 3db increase actually = twice the sound energy, i.e quite a lot more noise.

I put the Goodyears on my Zed recently and I'm very pleased with them. Lots of grip, very quiet and better ride. :driving:
