Tyre advice please- Non RFL

Hi all,

My E85 is eating rear tyres like there is no tomorrow, can anyone please recommend a hard wearing tyre? My indie suggested Michelin Pilot Sports, but I have also read that Goodyear F1's do wear well. I am doing 20k miles a year and Bridgestone Potenzas S001 seem to wear terribly and I drive like an old grandad.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Is it wear in one place on the tyre, or is it even? How many miles are you expecting? What car is it? What are your current tyres?

If it's uneven wear then you need your alignment fixing too - otherwise you're going to ruin another set of tyres.

FYI, I get 15-20,000 miles out of a set of Michelin Supersport rears and I don't drive like a granddad (unless that grandad is Stirling Moss or Tiff Needell).

Get a proper hunter wheel alignment done first

I get about 2 years driving out of my rear vredestein Ultrac Vorti's, doing about 7-8k per year. Obviously the harder I drive (more traffic light grand prix I partake in) the quicker the rear tyres wear down.

Blimey... I would be very happy with that mileage!! very impressive! Ive got even wear on the rears, its a 2.0 sport with 108's on it.

The indie said that the wear was across the tyre evenly but he is going to get it all set up for me on a Hunter for peace of mind. Cheers for that, Michelins do sound like a good choice.

Eagle F1's have done me well but will be giving Dunlop a try on the rear next.

MPS are good hard wearing tyres. Should get 15-16 k out of a set I you look after them.

Get the new tyres then a Hunter alignment.

Michelin Pilot sport 4 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3.

I've had the Goodyear Eagle F1, Falken FK452, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 and now on Michelin Pilot Sport 4.

The Eagle F1's seemed to be softer rubber than the Michelins. I'd recommend the Michelin Tyres over Goodyear.

As has been said previously the rears don't seem to last more than 20,000 miles even if you don't drive it like you stole it!

I used to do about 20K every year (not in a Z4, but in an e23 and an e39) - I have tried all sorts of tyres, the best for all round wear, grip etc were Michelin Energy - however I don't know what these are like on a Z4...

Thanks for the replies everyone, that is very reasurring that some of you are getting 15k+ miles on rear tyres, my car has gone through 2 sets of rear bridgestones in 12k miles, and I drive like I have got a full bucket of water on my lap. I am steering towards MPS at the moment as I have only just remembered that I had MPS on a Boxster many years ago and they were great tyres.

Make sure you shop around for them. Black curled fully fitted, Costco etc.

Then ask the local garage if they can better the prices.

Get an alignment too.

I cant get any MPS -4 at the moment, tried everywhere, I just called my local tyre center and they said that Mich pilot sport 4's are out of stock everywhere, they have had customers waiting since October. Think I might have to give Goodyear F1's a go.
