Seeing as the post containing the suggestion that tyranny is apparently in force in Aus at present, over the Covid restrictions, has been closed I would set the record straight because clearly some of you have absolutely no idea about the real situation here. Firstly, just about all restrictions have been, or are about to be, removed. There will be some restrictions on gatherings and wearing of masks until vaccination rates reach 90%, which should be sometime around Christmas. Interstate and International air travel is about to restart, borders are about to be reopened. In my state, of nearly 2,000,000, we have had 4 deaths.....18 months ago. Australia's total death toll to date has been 1,448, with the vast majority of them (over 1,000) in Victoria because they adopted a poor role model to follow early on (the UK) and some locals refused to comply to fairly minor restrictions. This eventually forced the government into a crackdown, which has just now been lifted.
Many don't like the restrictions (and I don't agree with some of the decisions either) but comply because they see the long term benefits of a little pain now as a tradeoff for less long term damage to society. Personally my restrictions have been 6 days of lock down (could still go shopping, outdoor exercise and walk the dog) over 18 months and having to wear a mask when in the shops. Otherwise life has been pretty much as normal. Restrictions have been tougher in NSW and Victoria, because of the reasons outlined above. Tough, but doesn't sound like tyranny to me as no one is being unreasonably detained, held incommunicado in secret prisons, or being shot.
As always, we have a choice come election time....if enough are upset at what the government has done they get booted, if most support the decisions, they get re-elected. Interesting to note that we have had State elections in Western Australia and Queensland during the pandemic and both sitting parties were overwhelmingly re-elected. WA in particular reduced the opposition to single digit seats in a landslide. The ruling party won 53 out of 59 seats with the former major opposition party reduced to 2 seats, this indicates overwhelming support for the governments decisions.
Most of the yelling is coming from a (very) small bunch of malcontents, that every country has, and who have been given a disproportionate amount of publicity . I recommend that you ask some one living in Aus what the situation is before suggesting we live under some sort of Saddam Hussein regime.
