Tyranny in Aus

Seeing as the post containing the suggestion that tyranny is apparently in force in Aus at present, over the Covid restrictions, has been closed I would set the record straight because clearly some of you have absolutely no idea about the real situation here. Firstly, just about all restrictions have been, or are about to be, removed. There will be some restrictions on gatherings and wearing of masks until vaccination rates reach 90%, which should be sometime around Christmas. Interstate and International air travel is about to restart, borders are about to be reopened. In my state, of nearly 2,000,000, we have had 4 deaths.....18 months ago. Australia's total death toll to date has been 1,448, with the vast majority of them (over 1,000) in Victoria because they adopted a poor role model to follow early on (the UK) and some locals refused to comply to fairly minor restrictions. This eventually forced the government into a crackdown, which has just now been lifted.
Many don't like the restrictions (and I don't agree with some of the decisions either) but comply because they see the long term benefits of a little pain now as a tradeoff for less long term damage to society. Personally my restrictions have been 6 days of lock down (could still go shopping, outdoor exercise and walk the dog) over 18 months and having to wear a mask when in the shops. Otherwise life has been pretty much as normal. Restrictions have been tougher in NSW and Victoria, because of the reasons outlined above. Tough, but doesn't sound like tyranny to me as no one is being unreasonably detained, held incommunicado in secret prisons, or being shot.

As always, we have a choice come election time....if enough are upset at what the government has done they get booted, if most support the decisions, they get re-elected. Interesting to note that we have had State elections in Western Australia and Queensland during the pandemic and both sitting parties were overwhelmingly re-elected. WA in particular reduced the opposition to single digit seats in a landslide. The ruling party won 53 out of 59 seats with the former major opposition party reduced to 2 seats, this indicates overwhelming support for the governments decisions.
Most of the yelling is coming from a (very) small bunch of malcontents, that every country has, and who have been given a disproportionate amount of publicity . I recommend that you ask some one living in Aus what the situation is before suggesting we live under some sort of Saddam Hussein regime.

Well said buddy.. there is always the ill informed self opinionated type who think they know better than those experiencing these things first hand, they have the right to there own opinion of course but nice to see it put straight with some true isms

If only the f*ckwits running the UK had taken even a bit of Aus' attitude towards this, maybe we wouldn't have been, and still are, in such a terrible place with no real light at the end of the tunnel.
Aus and NZ have been poster-boys for the whole world, but for some strange reason the rest of us have scoffed and laughed. I don't get it :(

Ah, I think I misread the title - thought this was going to be about cross-dressing

It seems perfectly reasonable what's going on over there :D

Ah, the consummate thespian Terrance Stamp in one of his finest roles as Priscilla

I have a friend living in Sydney who says he is being treated like prisoners. Police helicopters flying over parks and beaches telling those out exercising to go home or be fined. Police checking if coffee cups actually have coffee in them when people are removing their masks sitting on a park bench with a drink. Doesn't sound like somewhere I want to live anymore.

Odd, Ive got a mate out in Melbourne who seems happy as Larry with nowt bad to say about the situation in fact he's loving life over there and hasn't even once mentioned covid restrictions

That's a great insight from someone who is actually there!

Given how few deaths have been recorded in Aus, and those election results, I can't help thinking things might have been much better here in the UK if we had kept tougher restrictions in place longer last year until we really got our vaccination programme up and running early this year.

Sounds like a police state......ah, well they are used that being mostly being decedents of convicts.

ROFLMAO. That's original....never heard that one before.....and it's decendants not decedents. Just as well you can't be transported for spelling. :P
My niece lives within 20 metres of the PM's home in Sydney and most of what your friend says is true.....when 30-40 "friends" get together for a "coffee", when crowds are specifically not allowed in a pandemic, the cops get stroppy.

Well there are always 2 sides to any story and the OP lives there and has a first hand view of what's going on...at least where he lives. Australia is a huge continent with different states, territories with varying laws and leaders.

I know that in the other thread he told me that I had viewed carefully edited videos of a few malcontents. I'm sure there is some validity to his view but when you see police shooting people retreating from them (basically shooting people in the back with rubber bullets)...well that is hard to paint differently than what is seen in the video.

I have listened to various people in charge in Australia making what I would consider tyrannical remarks. Of course biden has said and done similar. The whole world is in turmoil...mostly one that has been planned for some time now and once an opportune moment arrived (also planned) their devious plans are now able to be instituted.

Hold on brothers...the ride is only going to get wilder from now on. Stash food, ammo and firearms (if your location allows such)...and Hold on!!

A bigger lie than "the check is in the mail." "Two weeks to flatten the curve." Sort of defines the moment IMO.

I know that most of you have been jabbed. I will reuse to the death to do so. I read one person's comment on the Net, I subscribe to it as well, "This is the hill I will die on." I work for a company with over 100 employees and biden has stated that I will be required to be vaxxed...well I am ready to allow them to fire me as I will not comply! Luckily I am over the retirement age (I am 66) so I will be more able to stop working than some of my coworkers. Who knows, maybe it will be the best thing for me...time will tell.

I wish you all the best no matter what side of the fence you are on and I hope you wish me the same as well.

Lets clear this up as well. The only video I can find of protesters being allegedly shot at was of renegade union malcontents (disowned by their own ultra radical left wing union the CFMEU....look it up) who after throwing missiles were finally dispersed after some 5 hours of being allowed to control the streets. What you see (if that is the video) is scum desecrating the Australian War Memorial, by drinking and urinating on sacred ground, not some peace loving hippies defending freedom. It's easy to read into something that wasn't there when it suits your narrative. As I said....don't believe what you see because they only show the end result and not the lead up.
If you have another video, lets see it. As for the other stuff........

Interesting to hear another perspective [ref]rdgreen[/ref],

You are right in the sense that I don't know any born Australians but I do have a number of friends from University who have made their way over there (and now have permanent residency) and a number of former workmates who made the move over there within the last 10 years or so.

I don't know anyone in South Australia nor Adelaide (which by the way looks a lovely place). Majority of my mates are in NSW in either Sydney or Melbourne.

They paint a slightly different picture to what you do. I am not going to get into the politics (which I think is as bad as the brutality) but here is a perspective that you may not have seen.

Without spending more that 10 minutes on this I will put a couple of links below to show you why perhaps people outside of your circle think that things might night be right over there- and perhaps you could forgive us from thinking it's tyranny- I would love to get your view point and on face value if you think they are acceptable behaviour?

PLEASE NOTE---- SOME OF THESE LINK ARE UNPLEASENT AND THERE IS POLICE VIOLENCE----- RONK - do not open them with your grandchildren on your lap.

This was just a quick search but honestly there is loads more incidents of cruel and oppressive government.... And we haven't even brought up the on going ICAC investigations out there.
