Two Issues

Hi all,

I bought my z4 e86 6 weeks ago. I have two issues. The car is currently sitting at an independent garage and I need to decide how to proceed:

1) The drivers side window regulator broke yesterday - the motor still works however. I have been quoted £270 for parts, labour and VAT to get this fixed. Does this seem reasonable?

2) The drivers side Xenon headlight will not auto level. Garage says that there are no issues with the sensors etc. and that they cannot get an error code. They advised taking the car to BMW for a diagnosis. Is there anything obvious that could have been missed?

Interesting first post. Can't help you with your problems unfortunately but would politely advise you first introduce yourself and car, including photo's as current forum decorum dictates and before the forum mafia jump down your throat...
Welcome along.

Hi

My main account (flight147z) won't let me login - I have emailed the mod's RE this a few times but I'm not getting any responses. Unfortunately I have had to create this account to try and get a response to this query.

Complete regulator is about 150, for new part,

Second issue could the sensor be swapped from one side to the other an see if the fault goes with it

There is only 1 sensor front one sensor rear. The garage may not have checked the rear one? Its common for the little plastic arms at actuate the sensor to brake get them bot checked.

Not sure about that Mark!!

I do know its easy to brake the front one :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

If only one of the headlights isn't moving doesn't that suggest the sensor on the front wishbone is working? This sounds a bit like motor in the headlight is playing up? I don't have xenon headlights on my car but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help.

Regulators can be fixed yourself if you are handy with the tools but if not just get it done properly. Make sure they re attach the membrane between the door and the door card properly as failure to do this can lead to damp in the car.

With regard to point 2. (Assuming it was a trade purchase) Did the garage MOT the car, as I would have thought that a Xenon not self levelling would have been a failure ?
If so did they overlook it when it should have been their responsibility and therefore claimable under their warranty ?

Bloody good point

Private unfortunately - not complaining about that though as I knew the risk. Also I'm not 100% sure if it has stopped working since I bought the car or wasn't working at the time of purchase.

Assume that is the part that I need (if no problem with purchasing second hand).

They are quoting £170 for the part and £102 labour. Labour sounds fair. Part is BMW sourced and comes with a motor.

How about a good indie specialist assuming you're talking genuine BMW garage?
Just a thought.

This is an independent, not even a specialist (though they do seem good). Tried to get in touch with Sytner for a quote, got left on hold for 20 mins and hung up
