Two BMW's, Six Wheels..

Hi all, once again I've been gone for a while! Keep flitting in and out. Nice to see Mr Essex has returned though.

So, I've still got the zed, plans for a Porsche went drastically south due to the problems surrounding the 987's engine.

With that in mind I had to find something else to waste my money on, I'd planned a two wheeled road trip across europe with a friend but was rather dreading sitting on a Ducati for that long.

So, after many test rides, I ended up with one of these:

A BMW R Nine T, a 1200cc air cooled lump of fun.

And just because some may find it interesting, some pics of my european trip, from London to Austria and back:

Great looking bike, love the detail on those models. I sold my last boxer after owning it for ten years, never had a problem with it :)

I had a boxer a few years previously as well

Great bike :)

How did you get on with long distance touring with no fairing at all?

Lovely bikes! I'm re-watching long way down at the moment and I have a real want for a GS because of it!

Thanks! It was fine to be honest. The one day of torrential rain I did question my decision, but other than that I was far far cooler in the 35 degree sun and I love the feeling of speed from an unfaired bike :D

Love your new bike with the Modern and Retro rolled into one, air / oil cooled boxer, upside down forks with laced wheels and that open rear end, Brembo brakes the list goes on. I wouldn't have another sports bike (too old ) sold my Hayabusa and bought the Z. this looks great and not as heavy as my old XJR.

How did it fair against the Scrambler ?

Fantastic photos OP - that must have been a fantastic trip!

From the header I didn't twig before I opened it - was thinking I would say something like 2 BMWs and 12 wheels 'cos I have a set of winters! :?

That's good to hear, I agree with you about the feeling of speed and connection with the elements in an unfaired bike. I'm really fancying another bike and I love these boxer twins. But... I've already got 3 cars and will be pulling the trigger on a 45' yacht in the autumn... So in SWMBO's view a bike would be just madness. Also she (we) want to move house. So it's all fluid. Which means I won't get one.... unless she finds and buys a new toy first

Thanks chaps, didn't realise so many on here would be into their bikes!!

I want to get a mate to drive to car somewhere for me so I can take some decent shots of the pair all clean and sparkly.

Thanks mate, that combination of things mentioned above was what really settled me on this bike. Hayabusa? Nutter! Total nutter!

The other REALLY strong contender was the new Thruxton R, but two things put me off that in a big way. 1) The tank was just to skinny for me, it felt like the bike was tiny between my legs and 2) there was some weird attempt at an imitation of quality. The aluminium pieces that connect the front mud guard to the front hub were actually made of plastic on the triumph, just trying to look like aluminium. The BMW has nothing but quality engineered parts on it.

Against the scrambler, yes it's the better bike, but my friend is the better rider. He has had the bike longer so was comfortably able to drop it into the corners and really wind on the power, I was a little more tentative shall we say?

But, with equal riders there'd be no competition. The R Nine T is more nimble, it's so much quicker, the torque just monsters the scrambler.
