TVs - plasma vs LCD, what's best?

Personnally i dont touch LG. They may be better now but were rubbish years ago and the failure rate was 90% + when we used them in the trade.
 
If your TV is not installed in a light-controlled environment, plasma will definitely give out better contrast as LCD will be more ''washed-out''. Plasma's from Samsung and Panasonic among others consume 50% less power than just a few years ago. Black level and image speed on plasma's is also better, so watching sport events or movies with dark scenes will be a plus. I own a 63'' Samsung in a dedicated home-theater room and the colors/blacks are absolutely amazing.

DON'T FORGET THE CALIBRATION! here's a link to a web site that offers free calibration figures for many TV's, so you save yourself a bundle from having a pro come in and charge you $$.

You simply look-up your TV model (even if it's a different screen size, it uses the same adjustment figures), then most of them have a ''calibration'' tab that brings you to the numbers you are looking for. 5 minutes to calibrate like a pro :thumbsup:

I like the sound of that (for the photo/music functions) - perhaps something to add on at a later stage once I'd decided on a TV.
 
I have a resellers account for that equipment ( I have 4 of them and 3 media servers :oops: ), and with you being Scottish, I am sure you would like a discount on the listed prices :D

I went plasma 3 years ago and got a Pioneer 42".Very pleased with it,LCD's at the time made me feel queasy when watching sport,they struggled to catch up with the movement.Yes it uses more power and gets very hot,but it's high up on the chimney breast about 8 metres away from where we sit , so makes no difference. These things were 2 grand back then and have come down loads since.Go Plasma.
 
At least you get proper electronics with a plasma :)

I repaired my original (£7k !!) plasma in December, still in perfect working condition and the image is also HD as it was a proper monitor.

I'm still no further forward - I think I need a couple more trips into stores to compare LCD vs Plasma. Certainly set on 42", certainly spending no more than £500 but preferably less, looking for best picture quality for the cash.

I'm just struggling to find the time to go shopping in store :roll:

As for tv's, Well I am in no way any kind of subject matter expert on these.
I have a 42" samsung LCD. no complaints, I can see pictures on the screen, they appear crystal clear to me and have no "angle" viewing problems and there are more connections on the back than i Know wht to do with. I suspect that it could be wired to the starship enterprise and not look out of place, not sure if it has warp capability though. :fuelfire:

That is the Pioneer PDP433. Power supply blew up as they always do, that is the entire silver box at the back covering about a third of the unit. In the earlier days, Pioneer would replace them FOC. As the screen was 6 years old no longer ...

Pioneer replacement cost: £600, eBay new unit: £150. That unit is now in the children's play room and is now primarily used by them for their tv programs and play station. Pioneer is the best Plasma provider, however they no longer manufacture them.
 
One of my mates says that there's only 3 manufacturers of plasma screens, one of them being Samsung who make the majority of the screens used by everyone. True?

Sorry, but you cannot compare image resolution of any projectors to a HD plasma set, it's simply not in the same league. Unfortunately, your picture doesn't reflect reality at all.

yes, I was referring to brightness and contrast, not the number of lines, thanks for clearing it up.
 
Ideally I would like all types. Have the plasmas in the lounge and other rooms, have a LCD in the bedroom and have a projector in a dedicated room.

If I was to mention this at home, I would expect an answer like "you can sit in the garage then" type response ...
 
Pioneer did use to make the best plasmas around but they had a premium price tag. At the time i got my plasma it was panasonics top spec and cost £1600. Pioneers top spec plasma was £2000. With £500 to spend i dont think you can beat the Panasonic 42" X10 without spending more.

Crazy cheap. Decided in the end not to pay extra for a 1080p model - we don't watch that much TV, don't have Sky HD or Freeview HD (both of which are 720p broadcasts anyway) and don't have a blu-ray player other than the one built into my wife's laptop. It'd be nice perhaps to have 1080p but I seriously doubt we'll invest heavily into blu-ray for quite a while yet, so aren't losing out anything.

Also bought an upscaling (to 1080p equivalent) DVD player via Tesco outlet on ebay for £38 delivered. Appears to be a bargain too.

Time to set it up tonight :)
