My mother just died ........ and I have the job of wrapping everything up.
Someone hinted that her TV was a rental item and would probably need returning.
I was unable to find any documents - or any direct debits, so I phoned the 3 local TV rental companies .....

Number 1 - no sir we have no records here.

Number 2 - oh yes sir, just look on the back of the TV and tell me the make and serial number and I will check it with our database. Errrrrr no, how about you check your database and tell me the number and the make and I will bring it back. You have the information in front of you ............. its a Philips ........... errrrr sorry no its not, thank you goodby.

Number 3 - yes sir we have it on record, I will send someone round to pick it up up .......... errrrrrr no you will not, tell me the make and serial number and I will bring it over .......... its a Toshiba ........ errrrr no its not, goodby.

Much later I find the receipt for a purchased TV.

What a bunch of **************

I worked with a guy who wasnt really all there. He stayed at home with his mother and brother until his mum died then it was just him and his brother (age around 57 at the time)
He had a rented tv from a local shop, 28" box thing springs to mind, and they had had it for over 20 years!!
Cant remember the exact figures of monthly payments but even at £20 a month the tv had cost him almost £5000.
We suggested he go and see the rental shop owner and give him a smack in the mouth.

So sorry to hear about your Mum.

I started my career (if I may call it that) working for Granada TV Rental in the early 1980s, but we wouldn't have done anything like you have described. I didn't realise that such places were still going, thought everyone bought their TVs now.

So sorry to hear the news about your mum, having been there a few weeks ago I completely sympathise.

Re the TV rental companies, this sounds like a well practised routine, given the price of TV's these days why on earth would anyone bother to rent a TV, except perhaps the elderly.....
