perhaps a little overkill for a Roundtable Ball ..

Now that is a Dinner Suit

Midnight Blue is a strong look, but under artificial light looks incredibly dark/ black and has a deepness that a black DJ doesn't have.

If 'JB' is wearing a shawl collar, 1 button DJ with a turn down collared shirt then that's good enough for me

I agree, I ordered mine with the vintage barathea midnight blue... ;)

I am still wearing the m and s Dj I bought as a birminghsm uni student in Sutton Coldfield.

Plenty of vomit down it but always cleans off.

Combined with the right combo of black bow tie which I tie myself on my leg first if I have to, double cuff dress shirt shoes and watch I get away with it.

Would never wear a cummerbund draws attention to a less than toned stomach.

Is it for a wedding?

You don't have to wear a cummerbund but if you do the colour should match your tie and the colours should compliment your partners dress.

Doesn't matter if your bow tie is a self-tie or 'ready tied'.
Bow tie is best with wing collar shirt and a dress wing collar shirt is best (tiny pleats down the front in a panel)
You can wear a standard collar with a bow tie if you want.

Are you trying to lead the poor man astray?! :P Always self tie, always! I prefer a tall winged collar too, preferably detachable...Although a winged collar is traditionally associated with white tie, I'm not sure many people are aware of that anymore (a wing collar with a clip on tie is definitely a :headbang: :headbang:  ).
The shirt should be double-cuffed with subtle cuff links and studs not buttons. A marcella front or subtle pattern is more elegant than elaborate ruffles whichever collar you choose. I like a single-breasted jacket with working cuffs and I agree with the comments about formal dress shoes too. Given the season, a black overcoat and a tasselled white silk scarf would complete the look.
:D

:D

I don't mean a clip on bow tie, (they look awful imo) I meant the ones on a band that hooks together and sits under the collar. A good one is hard to tell from a self tie one.
I was just giving him all his options. The ready tied ones, again, are perfectly adequate.

It's some charity thing I think? Don't really know tbh my bro said he's the chairmen of his round table why don't I come to this event on Friday and next thing I know I'm 30 quid down for the ticket and need a tux! Chuff! Off tm to buy one as renting one seems to cost over 70 of the folding!

I'm off out tm to see how much one is.. If I spend 140 on one (which seems to be about the price) then I'd only need to wear it twice to break even...

Jeeez ill have to wash the bleeding Z at this rate to look good when I turn up

It's chuffin Blackpool the only people who need a suit let alone a tux are the bouncers and locals when they go to court!

oi !!

we dont wear suits for court... the magistrate thinks you are flush and gives you a higher fine.

you missed the dress shoes, which few people own but combined with a self tie will always get comments.

Charity events are different, you can wear what you like really; people have very bright combinations.

Personally I am black cummerbund and self tied black bow, dress shoes and black on gold cufflinks, I have both styles of shirt, but think that a self tie on a wing collar look best.

Matching with your wife's colours is nice if you can, but my wife wears a different dress every time, so i would have dozens of different shades, so I wear black.

But sir, that's an American webiste :o

Simon Cundey, Director of Henry Poole (15 Saville Row) summarises Black Tie very nicely in this article imo (courtesy of GQ  ).

Pretty much agrees with what has been said, the only contentious issue being the non-use of wing collars.

Nice to see so many 'experts' on here. :poke: :P
I have no expertise, just an innate sartorial elegance :P

I would wear whatever you're comfortable with - any bow tie with a dress shirt and dark suit would likely suffice as nobody is likely to judge your efforts - just make sure it's beer-proof and have fun :D

done and dusted now i got one from Jeff Banks, white shirt normal collar, black/silver cuff links, black bow. they didn't have any self tie ones so i got the one that was designed to go with the DJ.

as for shoes im already too much in the hole for this dinner so im just going to get the auto glym out and give my black shoes a polish.
