I discovered today how to permanently turn off the UP/DOWN "Efficient Dynamics" shift indicator (in dash indicator on manual cars).
On the end of the left hand (indicator) stalk, push the button on the end until the in dash display is BLANK. (ie, no mpg/ave speed/ave mpg etc etc)
Once on the blank display setting press and hold the end button for about 5 seconds.
Once this has been pressed there's no more up/down shift indicator (ie same as when you're in SPORT/SPORT+ mode, but in Normal).
AFAIK it stays off too after you've stopped/locked etc.
Turning back on is the same process. Blank dash indicator, press and hold end button. You'll probably see the up/down arrow re-appear once it is reset back to ON.

PS noticed this pushing button in for several seconds also resets the various parts of the in dash car computer. So if you have Ave Speed/Ave MPG displaying, and you hit and hold the end button, it resets (same as reset in iDrive) - guess those with iDrive know this?
PPS as I said if most know this already and its been covered before, then feel free to delete this. I can't find reference to it in the online hanbook.
